The serfs who raised the animals called them by their Anglo-Saxon names: beef/sheep/pig/deer
The nobles who actually ate them regularly used their french names for the animals: cow=boef, sheep = mouton, pig = porc, deer = venesoun

Hence the meat became known by the french animal names boef -> beef, mouton -> mutton. porc -> pork, venesoun -> venison

jus' jokin' (this being a Yanki forum & all)!
(I wonder if it is common knowledge, that for a considerable period of time the language of the English court wasn't English at all & that the Lionheart maybe did not speak it at all)

Note to mention the language of the House of Saxe-Coberg and Gotha (who changed their name to Windsor in 1917) which subsequently combined with the Greek branch of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg in 1947.

(Victoria and Albert spoke German to each other at home, but I don't think Elizabeth's Greek was that good )

StuM, it is evident (& in view of the many misspellings by native speakers here):
we have a "mission-to-educate" (the German word is more telling: "Bildungsauftrag"!!)

So now I'm wondering how common this geo blocking is. Do a lot of URLs in the US do this?

Let's try an experiment. Those of you who can't see the image, try opening the URL above from a new tab and see if you can see the jokes at that URL directly.

I haven't been able to see any of socaldmax's posts for some time now, but I can see the direct link. UK.

I don’t know about what the Brits know but this Yank knows.

Worthless trivia question:
Which US president did not speak English as a first language?

I never had any large respect for good spelling. That is my feeling yet. Before the spelling-book came with its arbitrary forms, men unconsciously revealed shades of their characters and also added enlightening shades of expression to what they wrote by their spelling, and so it is possible that the spelling-book has been a doubtful benevolence to us. -Mark Twain

Oh gee, don't even get me started on spelling. When you compare a written word to its pronunciation in English (American and British versions) it often makes no sense at all. French is no better and Gaelic is a nightmare. Spanish on the other hand, has few and simple rules and if you see a word written you can pronounce it correctly.

I am occasionally tempted to write English words phonetically (rite for wright or right, thru for threw or through, etc) but it confuses people too much.

Re: The New Joke Thread

But, I’ve read that spelling is one of the most important things a witch needs to learn in school.

Spelling counts
While waiting on a Zoom call to start, we were having technical issues.
Client texted, and said, "please bare with me."
Thought it was an odd request, but she's the client.
Eventually we got the video to work, but now I'm fired.
