Re: The New Joke Thread
reminds me of this:
a big hurricane is coming and bubba's farmhouse is in peril..
The local sheriff comes around " bubba, you need to leave, storm's a-c'ming"
bubba "no worries, I'll be fine, God will protect me"
The hurricane is ashore and bubba's house is 3' underwater....
the sheriff sends the FWC in a rowboat to get bubba " c'mon, bubba, we're here to save ya"
Again, bubba " no worries, God will protect me....
The waters now rise to the roof and bubba is perched on top....
sheriff sends the national guard in a helicopter to get bubba's stubborn ass outa a jam " bubba, you really got to climb on this helicopter...now !!!"
but bubba insists " no worries, God will protect me"
The storm water rise more, and bubba is drowned.
On arrival at the pearly gates, bubba asks God "what happened here, why didn't you come and save me? "
God, " what are you talking about, bubba, I sent the sheriff, the FWC and the national guard !!"

Re: The New Joke Thread
having spent some time in Greece, I can say without a shred of hesitation, that ouzo, is without a doubt, the vilest alcoholic concoction devised and made by man. I think I would rather drink gasoline than ouzo, come to think of it, maybe it is gasoline. You could put a gun to my head, but you could not force me to take even a tiny sip of this stuff. Even the smell, a disgusting aniseed aroma is enuff to make me hurl.
It's a brave soul that can imbibe this poison ! with or without smelt !

I disagree. The vilest concoction ever is mezcal especially the worm.

So I guess Raki, (distilled Ouzo) has the same or lesser attraction?

Re: The New Joke Thread
or Pastise in France or Aquavit, Malteser in Danmark or Arak or Chinchon in Spain, Ramazzotti in Italy?
Anises are quite common, even Sambuca is an Anis liquor with a lot of sugar in it.

After you've partaken of enough Ouzo, pretty much ANYTHING will taste good, either that, or you won't really care WHAT you're eating tastes like . . . said a friend . . .

Aw, Pastise. I have some in my cupboard! It is an acquired taste for sure. It reminds me of a medication we used to get with an upset stomach many years ago, paregoric.

I would give Retsina a close second in the vile Greek drinks category

Re: The New Joke Thread
I've never eaten smelt, though I know what it is, and sometimes see it at the fish market.....not even sure where it comes from...I think Canada, or some other northern climes, but can't be sure of this...it's not local, this I know.
As far as I know....it is eaten whole.... head, tail, fins, innards, the whole works....like other whole cooked small fish there is a certain crunchiness to it, with a softer bite....I generally see these fish fried, but I think some are baked...Those small fish are too small to fillet, clean or otherwise...so they get eaten whole...if you were to close your eyes and not look at what you are eating...might be enjoyable.
When I eat fried shrimp (in the shell) , I will sometimes (mostly) eat the shell, little legs and tail as well, but only when it's fried. Some people, when they see this, think I'm a bit weird, I don't dispute the weirdness, but to me, fried shrimp, shell and all, has a good taste.
I can recall drinking retsina wine in Greece, besides the ouzo....I have to hand it to the Greeks, they drink stuff no other person can find palatable. Retsina, like ouzo, follows ouzo in the vileness department by a scant hair......and that is no joke !!
The Greeks likely think I'm weird !!
