Dolly Parton sings Joelene, at 33RPM.

Dolly Parton's "Jolene" played at 33 RPM has an unexpected sound. [VIDEO]

Sounds really good.

I know what you mean about being a magnet. I got my Viagra mixed up with my iron supplements and now every time I go skinny dipping I point to the north.

I thought it funny, because to me it sounded better, course I don't like Dolly Parton's music.

Ya, but what was that thing going round and round during the whole song? Was that a laser pick-up? Why was the disk black?

I am getting on in years and my thought processes are getting a bit fuzzy but if I didn't know any better I might guess that you are poking fun at the older generation.

No, poking fun at the younger generation for not knowing history.

Re: The Joke Thread

I remember my oldest daughter when she was bout 10,now 30 when she found my record collection. She took one out and looked at it for some time quite fascinated. She turned and looked at my wife and I and said "Wow both sides?"
Seemed the CD generation never considered both sides as useable

That's a sad fact. I am constantly amazed at the history, mostly recent as in mid-late 20th century that my otherwise brilliant daughter doesn't know. But she does at least know what an album is because until 2 months ago I still had about 7-800. Finally gave in to my wife and took them to a used record shop and got $2,000 for the lot.

Re: The Joke Thread

Wifey B:

Well, I know my history. Once long long long ago, back when Don and Skipmac were still youngsters, Tommie Edison was tired of hearing his mommy sing off key. So he invented this thing that could spin around and he could put a stylus thing on and music would play from people who really could sing. Although most of them aren't singing now.

But it was only on one side. Two sides didn't come until Europe in the late 1910's. You know....you had to be more freaky than Edison to go double. Then they became the norm and all lived happily ever after until people started trying to make everything in the world smaller.

But first in the 30's reel to reel took foot but they'd get all screwed up and no one could rethread them and so then there were tape cartridges but we needed the Dutch to invent the cassette in the 60's. Actually this dutch dude, let's see...what was his name. He was an Otter. No. Word association. Ottens. He was with Philips/Norelco. Wonder if he invented electric razors too. Doubt it.

In the 70's the Japanese decided to create a new weapon but they were banned from guns so they invented optical digital audio discs, designed to corrupt all the teens in the world, but they couldn't do it so back to the Dutch and the compact disc in 79. But no one believed in it until Sony and Phillips teamed up. Ever wonder how Sony could be so smart on some things but not others. Maybe they should have listened to the dutch on betamax vs. vhf.

But now you have it.

And we young people know our history. I've seen records like 78's and 45's and 33's. On some old movies and tv shows like Pawn Stars and American Pickers. I even have seen those funny machines to play them on but I'll pass.

Oh and now CD's. That's old fashioned. Kids today look at you like "why? That won't fit in my ipod or my phone. Where's the usb?" Yes, my childhood is now ancient too. Got to have it online and download and all that. Oh well.

Now I'm depressed over that and knowing it won't be long till no CD's. What will I use the CD player in my car for? Guess I'll have to trade cars. Well, I can plug in music to it. Ignore that place the disc goes.

Wifey B: Every generation takes things for granted that were just marvels to the previous generation. I taught and it was so much fun, especially with elementary kids, to tell them about these things. Oh, and letting them read childhood books from years ago and ask "What is?"

It was so funny that the kids at the orphanage hubby and I are involved with wanted to have a 50's night and they planned it, concentrating on the dress and the music. But we found an old black and white tv for the night and "record players" and records and taped the microwave, making it unavailable. Took all cell phones away. Brought in analog clocks and hid digital ones. They ones in school got home that night and just looked around like what the f... happened. Oh set up some old phones too. We ran out of something and shocked them by telling them it was too late and all the stores were closed. Oh and only could get three stations on the television. I can't remember the other things. Oh found some of the old classic radio shows and turned them on. Was so funny with them laughing at Jack Benny and George Burns and Gracie.

No generation is better than earlier or later, just all different. All the older people who think of the good old times, have only selective memory and if you told them what they would have to give up. And yes even the sailors leading the simplest, freest, least technology type lives would be giving up some things they'd miss. Too bad we can't always keep the best of the past while moving on. But it doesn't work that way.
