These were the last of the major wooden cargo ships.

Built during WW1 to augment the US maritime service, the fleet was discontinued due to the war's end.

Amazing that 323 were built! That is a lot of wood!

The article states they were the last largest commercial wooden vessels built, the end of centuries Long tradition.
