Re: Terrified children cling to each other as killer whales swim towards them
Spear fishing in Porlier Pass BC in kelp in the 80's, a young seal was trying to snag my catch at about 40' depth
Felt a wave and a black wall scooted pass me and seal was gone in a burst of blood.
Visibility not that good, but definitely a killer whale.
I just wonder how many divers have been taken by them?

Re: Terrified children cling to each other as killer whales swim towards them
After a dive off Lime-Kiln Lighthouse, I was fooling around in the kelp when suddenly seals started shouldering their way past me, then giving me these weird looks as they passed by and disappeared into the jungle. I didn’t really know what was going on until I heaved myself up onto the rock ledge and turned around to see the kelp just flattening down and two big fins casually cutting through the water about 20 feet away...
These were probably youngsters doing a sweep to herd everyone off the reef to open water where the rest of the pod was probably waiting with mouths open.

Re: Terrified children cling to each other as killer whales swim towards them
Scary.. but yeah..!! pretty cool.
Had a pod come that close and circle the boat mid Atlantic once.. leader had at least 6ft of dorsal fin.. they cruised in company with me for a few days in between disappearing for a few hours a day to hunt.. then I think I went out of their migration (food) route as they went off one morning never to be seen again.
Don't think they're that interested in humans as a food source.. and 100% smarter than sharks.

That's just it Boatie, they are so much bigger and smarter, that any taking of a diver by them underwater, would never be noticed in murkey waters.
Still, have not heard of any attacks outside the SeaWorld scenario, so who knows?

Maybe they think we taste bad? Or scuba tanks make them burp?! ....just joking.

I think them highly intelligent, and recognize us as also.
However lock an animal up and it may turn on you, even the trusty family dog.

Saw a cute cartoon of a mother killer whale teaching the young one who was biting on a diver
"You have to peel them first"

Re: Terrified children cling to each other as killer whales swim towards them
There are records of orcas sinking a sailboat or two. And I know someone who came awfully close to being eaten... She was setting a scientific instrument package on a small piece of floating ice when an ora “sparred” one edge and tipped the ice - toward two other orcas waiting with mouths open. She dangled from the ice anchor for a loooong moment. Shadow mistaken for that of a seal? Probably. But just imagine if orcas ever make the connection between ice floes and dinghies! Tip over. Receive meat!

Re: Terrified children cling to each other as killer whales swim towards them
I read about killer whale attacks a while back- just rubbish internet stuff but apparently there is only one confirmed attack in the wild in history and that person survived allowed to swim to shore. There are about 1 per year of near misses but unconfirmed.
You would wonder why, those kids were a nice easy snack. We must taste like crap. None of the articles knew why we get passed up.
