Stunning abandoned yacht

This yacht has been abandoned here in Corfu for something like 10 years and at one point was sunk. It's now in my marina and I believe that at some point it will be towed to Athens to be auctioned off.

Such a lovely looking yacht, such a waste.

I'd like to know the back story on this.

Hoppy,

See if you can find out the cause of the sinking.

Re: Stunning abandoned yacht

Still stunning to me, after enough years, is the obscene level of waste there can be in the sailing world. Well it's not just the sailing world, maybe its just more magnified or blatantly apparent in the sailing world. The turnbuckles on this boat are (were?) worth more than my whole boat. Ah who knows, one man's "waste" is another's "need" I guess. Still, to me, I am sad thinking of how much good that half million bucks (give or take) could have done somewhere... guess it's just the bleeding heart, tree-hugging, liberal in me!

Re: Stunning abandoned yacht

Can't get my mind around the Euro's obsession with teak decks. Probably will advertise as having a new main. Unless someone stole the sail cover or it's shredded to nothing looks someone sailed it in and then just walked away. Sad situation. Unless there is an ownership issue like a bank foreclosure or a seizure for drugs or other illegal activities, someone has money to burn. Yes it is a waste but if someone buys and brings it back to yacht standards there will be a lot of work for a boatyard and its employees.

Re: Stunning abandoned yacht

The point is where she is.

Is Corfu in one of the PIGS countries perhaps? And why such a nasty acronym then?

In some countries ... in some still EU countries ... it takes ages to auction a boat that is overdue on the port charges, abandoned or otherwise 'faulty'.

In Spain there are marinas where such boats make up a percentage of docking space, while the management will ask to move out boats that are in the marina and pay a monthly because of 'lack of docking space'.

So it may be mostly the problem of the country where the boat is that is getting abandoned beyond the point of recovery.

Teak decks look great, much better than plain grp decks.

The teak planks look pretty thick, so I wonder if it would be practical to remove them and then reglue and sand them back?

Before I heard it had sunk I was thinking maybe a half million euro might get it back sailing.

I heard they cannot auction it until 2 years after its been reported to the port police

Re: Stunning abandoned yacht

More of a platform for racing than cruising, but the link posted by estarzinger shows she was a real beauty in her prime years. Really sad view now... Probably too far gone for recovery, as one would likely have to start from scratch, i.e. bare hull..
