From what I have gleaned, the amount of money that the pirates are making is much less than the amount of fish being poached from overseas fishing boats in their waters

It now seems that many Somali pirates are turning to piracy just so they can get captured and seek alsylum upon their release.

Considering one prisoner in Amsterdam who "thinks the lavatory in his cell is fantastic", I hate to think what Somalia is like!

If you want to see what the capital city, Mogadishu is like, look here.

I used to go there often on business in the 70& 80's It is an ex Italian colony not much had been done there since the Italians left after WW2? The harbor in Mogadishu is quite nice with lots of old Arabian style buildings around it.
The people I dealt with were quite pleasant with me, they are very cruel amongst themselves and to their animals, I mean any one with authority or of a higher "class" to others and I mean in words and even beatings! There was a lot of US, European, and Asian country's aid going in there at that time. Most squandered by the politicos.
As to the lavatories, the bathrooms there were among the worst in Africa, and believe me that is saying something! I am sure it has all gone down hill since then.
I feel sorry for the Somali friends I made there but believe most of them have left by now.

I have heard there is a battle going on between Madonna and Angelina Jolie to see which will adopt the captured "child Pirate"
