So, I Have this Anchor for Sale...

So I have this new, in the box, Fortress FX-23 anchor for sale for $200, on Craigs list.
A guy calls me from accross the country, and wants to buy it, but expects me to send him the anchor, then he will send me a "official Bank" check.

Sounds like an offshore scam. I've got lots of scam replies to ads for stuff for sale, but never a phone call. Guy sounded legit, but who knows.
He did try to impress me with the fact that he has a $500,000 sailboat. I started bowing down to him. Right!!!

With so much money, he should just call West Marine, and have them send him one, for over $300, and tell them, he will send a check after he gets it.

Nice try!

I'll tell you a funny story. I was moving away from Houston, TX, after having spent a year there in my mispent youth. I had bought a non-running Morris Minor automobile from a Rice University security guard, and had coaxed it back to life, and slapped on an Earl Scheib paint job, hoping to earn a little profit to boost my budget in those years of extreme student poverty. I finally found a buyer the day before I was supposed to leave. The only problem -- he wouldn't have the money until the first of the month. He said -- give me the keys and the pink slip and you'll get your money right after the first of the month. I had to get to California for reasons not worth going to and had little choice. So I handed over the keys and the pink.

Two weeks later the certified check arrived in my mailbox at my dorm in Santa Barbara.

Peckerheads like that are the reason I can't get people on the West Coast to sell and ship me a roller furler or the OMC kicker bracket I need for my dad's boat. I offer to pay via paypal for packing and shipping and they say no, I'm a scammer. What I am is too cheap to buy new at retail.

Selling my old truck recently on Craigslist I had at least a half dozen scam offers, some from overseas (yeah, go to America from the UK to buy a British truck). They'll send their "representative" by with a bank check to pick up the vehicle. Sad thing is, unless some people are falling for these schemes these scumbags would not be keeping the scam alive.

On the other hand.....

I have tried several times to buy stuff on craigslist and because I have an accent sellers invariably label me as a scammer. It is most frustrating.

A boating friend (this makes it boat related) bought a car from someone he knew, for $800. A while later someone hit and totaled his car. The insurance company paid him $1400. The guy who sold it to him, actually thought my friend should pay him $600!
