Sea Turtle Rescue

So we came across a sea turtle wrapped up in some derelict fishing gear out in the wild blue yonder. I cut him free and wanted to share the video to show how cruisers actually are not just a bunch of free loaders but do good for the community on occasion. There was a little push back from conservation groups... their advice is have the "authorities" that know what they are doing save the day. The video may be seen at PacificSailors.com: Sea Turtle Rescue.

Just wondering what other sailors would likely do in a similar situation?

Re: Sea Turtle Rescue

Typical of today's thinking...LET THE AUTHORITIES TAKE CARE OF IT...

Total BS.

I'd do exactly as you did and take care of the little fellow.

good job

Re: Sea Turtle Rescue

Then they are not true "conservation "groups, but posers.
You did the right thing.

Re: Sea Turtle Rescue

Chef Mike, you did the right thing

I would do the same. I would not leave an animal to suffer while I went to find some "authority".

Those conservation groups should hush up. They're just upset they didn't get the credit for the save.

I never could stand the notion of "let the authorities handle it." I say, if you see something broken, and you can fix it, just go ahead and fix the problem. Passing said problem along to the next person never gets anything done.

Cheers Chef Mike

Re: Sea Turtle Rescue

Just wanted to update the original post. I have since been in contact with a sea turtle conservationist that has done a lot of great things here in Puerto Vallarta. He congratulated me and in his opinion I had done the right thing with the exception of having my foot a little to close to his mouth. They do bite hard!

Seems like we are all working toward the same goal of seeing the turtles abound. Some just have a little different opinion on how to go about things. Thank you all for the support.

Re: Sea Turtle Rescue

+1 on a good deed!

This year we cruised from Guatemala to Bocas del Toro Panama. As we were making our approach into Bocas I spotted something odd in the water at the exact spot where a channel marker used to be. I assumed it must be an old derelict buoy, but as I got closer I realized it was two sea turtles mating!

Lots of mating grounds along the Panamanian coast and lots of conservation activity too.
