Questions To Ask?

I am looking at a boat tomorrow that I am interested in buying.

Its a fresh water boat, just FYI, not sure that matters?

Anyway, i am wondering what questions I need to ask the seller?

Like:

Has it ever sank?

Do you have a title?

I don't know? Anybody have a list they could share?

TIA!

Re: Questions To Ask?

I would search the forum with the subject being 'surveying a boat', there is bound to be some good info here.

You can also research 'how to survey your own boat', which will not make you a surveyor, but it will give you some ideas and maybe a list of what to look for.

Bring a flashlight and take lots of pictures. Good luck!

I agree with the previous post - lots of terrific advice available on this forum. You could also check Don Casey's book "Inspecting the aging sailboat".

Yes, clear title is essential.

Re: Questions To Ask?

Thanks for the replies. The boat ended up not working out, it was a little small.

One thing I noticed was that the automatic bilge ran around 4 times in the 30 to 40 minutes we spent on the boat. Is that normal? I am of the thinking that the bilge should be dry but I have no experience with that so I am not sure what the norm is?

The boat is sinking and the Seller doesn't know it - or was hoping you wouldn't know it.

So the answer to your earlier question would be: it hasn't sunk...yet.

(By the way, if you did ask a Seller if the boat had ever sunk, it would reveal you to be quite a greenhorn. The vast majority of boats never sink and we sailors go to great lengths to prevent that.)

Boatpoker's Marine Survey 101 (link provided by a ImaginaryNumber above) and Don Casey's "Inspecting the Aging Sailboat" are great resources.

Good luck!
