We sailed out beyond the Golden Gate Bridge to meet Queen Mary II, and had a great time. The bay was as easily as crowded as it can be for Fleet Week, etc -- which was surprising on Super Bowl Sunday. The
weather was warm, seas relatively calm, winds moderate.
Lately, I've been capturing the
NMEA data from my nav-system, as well as the output from my
AIS receiver, and post-processing them to create a GoogleEarth file of VALIS' track and the tracks of the AIS-equipped ships. You can see the QM2 track as she approached the bay and passed under the G.G. bridge (which she only cleared by about 30 ft!).
I have posted the GoogleEarth ".KMZ" file on the VALIS blog:
SAIL VALIS (see the attachment at the bottom of the blog posting). It appears that the QM2
AIS static data for length and beam have not been programmed -- which may be a bug in my
software. I plan to look into this.
