I found this post on Reddit to be very informative...
I am a sometimes solo sailor trying to sail

Do you really believe it? I mean 3.5 years to make it to the Pacific and after spending lots of time with natives can only open a coconut? I could do that after the first Tongan Loau! I just wonder if it is a troll.

Given the depth of his answers and experience with port authorities, sailing knowledge (and in light of the mention that he spent most of a year in Singapore seeing doctors while his boat was on the islands), I think it's plausible.

:-)

West Coast to Fiji is almost half way? Is it??

Opening a coco with a stick - well, why not use machete like anybody else?

Desert islands, wild tribes .... well .... errr - like where? I guess N of the Equator - I have sailed the 'normal' S route Panam to Aus and have seen cars, sat dishes and tarmac everywhere.

This is how legends and myths emerge. Doesn't make the teller a liar, but not a journalist either ;-)))

This guy has been there. Anyone who tries to open a coconut with a machete will spend half an hour hacking at the husk, while any 6 year old island kid knows how to peel the husk off on a sharpened stake in 30 seconds. You can use the machete to sharpen the stake.
