Poll - Unrelated to Sailing

OK, in another forum that I belong to that is completely unrelated to Sailing, we are having a debate. Unfortunately, people (myself included) have a dog in this hunt/discussion, and maybe can't see the debate clearly. Here's the question:

Assumption: one belongs to a FB page that requires you to request access and then be added to a group of about 200 people that are members of that page.

The question is: "does a reasonable, prudent person (an average person) feel that what they do/post/share on Facebook is private?"

What do YOU think?

P.S. Thanks for your input, and please feel free to think this is stupid and ignore it.

Nope. Nothing private on the web.

Don't use social media. I've just finished a masters in digital marketing. I'd suggest ensuring you have no presence on common social platforms. All these systems are milking you for data to market to you. There are a massive array of analysis tools to sift through the big data.

It's scary.

Nope not private in the slightest, assuming so would really show how little knowledge about Facebook you have.
The only private thing about FB is if you send a private message to a friend it's totally private, unless they share it with the rest of the world.
I use FB messenger to communicate with all sorts of people everyday. Friends, family, employees, business stuff. Instead of texting I use FB from my iphone.
It's partially an age thing

Re: Poll - Unrelated to Sailing

Facebook has nothing to do with it. Nothing you tell 200 people is private.

Facebook - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I suspect most "average" people might think that they actually have some privacy when online. They are of course completely wrong.
Facebook supposedly has some extensive 'privacy' control settings that a paranoid type (moi) might try to navigate. Someone might try to set up those parameters to attempt a little privacy, but it might be like taking a shower in one of those tents on the fantail, a transparent one (I have a FB, but really haven't ever used it).
And there are many other means of exposure while just going about your usual online, email and surfing activities.
Between the behind-the-scenes data scavengers, and Facebook, et al's (Yahoo, Adobe Flash, etc., etc.) basic peer-to-peer mechanics and xray's: you be gittin' nekkid online.

Like 'goboatingnow' posted: "IT'S SCARY." out there.

(I've been slinging bits and bytes since long before it was called "IT", the '60-70's, before it all got tied together-- the "www". Innertoobz-like comms could be fairly isolated/safe once upon a time, no more, unless you take some serious evasive maneuvers.)

If you still have the email account you used with Facebook, Facebook is still 'watching' you...

Re: Poll - Unrelated to Sailing

If you want to keep something private, why on earth would you post it on facebook?

Nothing on the web is private. That is why I am among those who are FB "drop outs"
