Phil,
I have been an upland bird hunter and duck hunter my entire life. The Migratory Bird Laws and those that apply to upland game: wild pheasant, quail, partridge, grouse, turkey, deer, elk, bear, etc. are strictly enforced in the U.S. and any violators are subject to confiscation of guns, equipment, trucks and boats in addition to heavy fines. In my 50 years of hunting, I have never seen any poaching and, rarely, hunters taking illegal/excessive bag limits. In regards to US Fisheries, try fishing illegally in the Florida Keys, Gulf of Mexico or North Atlantic American waters. They are heavily patrolled and well-enforced. And, although I'm not speaking from personal experience, I doubt Central and North European countries are much different. However, when I lived in Mexico, poaching of all game was a common experience. The law, if caught, was the "mordida." Good luck and safe sailing.
Go to Malta, Sicily, Sardinia, S SPain during migration and see for yourself.. don't take my word.. WTF do I know.
'Laws are made to be broken'... else one would not need them..

" Rognvald from previous above post. Good luck and safe sailing. P.S. And, I'm certain our Canadian friends to the North have equally strict laws.

40ish years ago I was in the USCG. we flew Foreign Fishing Patrol out of Elizabeth City, NC with fisheries represent tatives aboard. We took off at 6.00am Thursday mornings and pretty much flew the same route. We would find Russian trawlers at 4nm steaming East.

So,
Based upon your experience 40 years ago, should we conclude that American waters are being violated daily by foreign fishing vessels? And, there is no interdiction by the US Coast Guard? What do you think?

Rustic.. while I understand the request its part of the same problem.. abuse of the natural order and creating breaks in the food chain..
For example.. since Cod became scarce and those that are caught are deformed by pollution the Corporate fleets headed South and are hovering up Krill at an awesome rate so now instead of Cod Liver Oil we have Krill Oil as the substitute..
Krill is the base in the food chain.. run out of that and there's nothing for the tiddlers to feeds on.. no tiddlers no food next up the chain and the Domino's keep tumbling.

Warning.... I'm going

Tiddlers...... now I FINALLY understand what that word means! Thanks!
Well I only lived in Wales for two years and some of the lingo flew over me head. Alright - much did. ;-)

Anyway: now this makes sense....

A nudist from Notting Hill Gates
was pushed into a pond by his mates;
and a tiddler swam by,
and he said with a sigh....
Will you look what their using for bait!

Maybe its time we took a leaf out of a 3rd World book
Pakistan has 2 meat free days a week.. has done for years to keep demand down on a limited beef and mutton domestic supply.
Maybe its time the West had something like a Fish Free month 2 or 3 times a year to keep the demand on global fish stock down till they recover.. not constantly act like pigs at the trough..

I think international politics has not improved. I think that when the fishers call for a ban on northern shrimp you have a real problem. I think human nature haven't evolved. I think th CG gets told who to go after depending upon what issue some Pol wants to spotlight, and ain't poaching. I think i can not remember a time the USCG Sunk a poachers ship.

I'm not asking you to conclude anything. I'm telling you what I witnessed first hand. Simple, been there, done that.

I think using a carrier task force to patrol the region and sink a few would be an awful good start.

And yet the nutritionists keep extolling the benefits of eating more fish, now a couple times a week .

Suppose they will tell us to eat more beans when the fish are gone...
