Last feb we adopted Sugar Bee, a Maltese. Super fun, easy to live with bundle of joy. Most enjoyable dog we have had in 30 years of marriage and I have seen in my 55 years.

We raised Great Danes for years, and this bread is a satisfying difference.

There are times, I can tell Sugar Bee wants a K9 friend, to buddy around with. We are with him constantly, he is never crated. But you can tell, humans are not always satisfying companions. He loves to play with other dogs.

If I get another Maltese, will we have two dogs to love, or will we be outside the "pack" and no longer be his best friend?

I want my friend to be happy and not just serving time.

We got our sailboat and our Maltese at the same time, so not really sure who is named after who? People sail past us and ask where the name comes from, and we hold up the 4 legged version as they smile.

Sugar Bee never sets sail without Sugar Bee.

If we get another dog, help with names.

Mizzen?

Ketch?

Edson?

Yanmar?

Bow Spirit? (Spirit for short)

Any ideas? Like to keep the name sailing related.

Re: One Dog Or Two?

You will be part of a bigger, more fun and more loving pack. As to names, well you have sugar bee, how about honey bunch? Does that make me sound soft or what? I just love dogs, we have one, did have two, called Phang, a Phox terrier.

Re: One Dog Or Two?

We have two mini schnauzers and I think two dogs are best, especially if the first is well socialized. Ours hang out together but don't actually play much now that they aren't pups. The older one is definitely the dominant dog in our pack.

Picked up "Clipper" today. 3 month old Maltese from a breeder. About the size of a fuzzy slipper. Should get around 6 pounds. Both dogs are already friends on day one. Our dog thinks this dog is his date for the prom. Lol

Guess the older dog gets an appointment to get snipped.

I tried for a month to get a dog that needed minor to major rescuing from Craig's list. Because I wanted a certain breed of dog to match the appearance of the dog I already had, people would flag or remove my posts. Must be Maltese wars going on by local breeders. Something.

I had leads on four dogs, pics, descriptions, videos. Then you go to see the dog, and the people were fighting about giving up the dog, or the dog did not like my dog, or some snaphoo.

Yesterday I tried eBay Classifieds. Much better place to shop for puppies. Some rescues, but a lot of breeders. I am not a breeder hater. We sold Great Danes for several years.

Anyone looking for a great alternative to Craig's list, try eBay Classifieds. It is free!

Re: One Dog Or Two?

Clipper is a great name for your dog! And an absolutely adorable pup. Poor Sugar Bee....if the female pup is NOT in heat though it could just be dominating behavior. Sugar Bee is asserting his place in the pack. Believe it or not, our oldest female uses that same behavior on the younger female when she is trying to assert dominance. I would still get one or both dogs "fixed" though!

Re: One Dog Or Two?

Clipper is a good name. Get both dogs fixed. Adding a dog only makes the "pack" larger. That way you both get to cuddle at the same time.

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

Not done a puppy in several years. It is a chore to train them, but fun also. He is 3 months, but he still seems helpless and needy. Can't jump up on stuff yet, so beds are out of reach. He does not cry for his Mom and sleeps. That helps!

He likes to cuddle. Sugar Bee is a little more stand offish. Bee likes to wrestle, fetch and play tug of war, but cuddle is a little much for him. This baby may grow out of that. Bee was a bit of a rescue in that another dog in his last home picked on him. I think he is pretty much over that, but some abuse lingers and the result never goes away. I also need to be sure Bee understands it is not his turn for pay back time by mistreating this baby.

Re: One Dog Or Two?

We have the neighbor's dog come up here every day that her owners are at work. She is big and Phang is small, but they have come to an understanding about her visiting days here, and where they sit in the times that we take them both out in the car. They have their designated areas in both

Phang at the beach,

Gotta love that tongue.

PS Found her abandoned by the side of the road ten years ago.

Phang looks pretty sweet!

My wife was throughly opposed to a second dog. She broke down and smiled when she held him.

I will suggest she baby sit tonight. Hope that further wins her over.
