I believe it will be only a question of time. It makes not much sense to have the banner of another country as an important part of the banner of a completely different country. It would only make sense on colonial times. Along the time some nice designs were proposed for a new flag:

If I was a NZ'er I'd go with the new look. It's distinctive and as mentioned above, you can hardly tell NZ & OZ flags apart.
