Need a (free) notary in Norfolk, VA
We've sold most of our possessions now, but through a somewhat interesting series of events, we gave our truck to some needy friends of ours. The state of Texas requires a notarized affidavit of motor vehicle gift transfer. Is anyone here from Norfolk a notary?
I was hoping to find someone who would do it gratis! Thanks!

Check out the UPS and Fedex stores. They charge only $2 or $4.

Go to the Town Hall. They always have a free notary there.

Dear lord it's a couple of bucks. Just google Norfolk notary or if you have a smart phone ask it "nearest notary". It is worth inconveniencing a board member so YOU can save a few dollars? Jeez.

Thanks for the replies everybody! I think I'll try a FedEx store as there is one nearby.
Suijin, wasn't trying to inconvenience anyone, I kind of think of the cruising community as a family and thought someone might want to help out. Back in Houston you could expect to pay 10 or 15 bucks for a notary, I did not realize they could be had so cheap.

Also a military commissioned officer may notarize documents.

AFAIK, most banks where you have an account will notarize for free. Even without an account most would charge just a few $$, if anything.
BTW I believe VA allows for video remote authentication by its notaries. Now that may incur a hefty charge for the convenience aspect of it.

They'll want to see picture identification and they'll want to see you sign the document.

Howdy!
First, your Private Messages box is full and will not accept more PMs. Time to delete or archive some messages.
Secondly,
Friendly curious questions:
How did your first voyage on your new boat go?
Are you and the boat in Norfolk?
I thought you would be down in Florida or further by now.
Are you staying in Norfolk over the winter?
Regards!

With a little luck, your bank has a branch in Norfolk. They'll usually perform notary duties for free. We recently finalized our boat purchase at the sellers bank.
Good luck!

Unfortunately not! We bank with Compass, who don't seem to have a branch anywhere on the east coast. Go figure.
SteadyHand,
The passage from Annapolis to Norfolk was OK the first couple of days, last couple of days were a little rough (big seas), but we made it safe, no major hiccups or failures. We wound up not making any more headway after that because of hurricane Matthew, which we rode out in the marina in Norfolk. However, rather than spending the winter in Houston and leaving for good in the spring, we opted to go ahead and start our "new life" early. We are casting off the lines from Cobbs marina tomorrow, meeting with the crew of Totem on Friday, then who knows where from there? They've invited us to buddy boat with them outside to Charleston, which we are considering but haven't decided anything yet.

If someone can afford a smart phone, two dollars (or five dollars) for a notary shouldn't be an issue. You are paying someone for a service.
How much do you tip the dockhands at marinas?
