Nautical Tattoo Thread

There is a long history of tattoos and the sea.
My first tattoo is on my calf. It's a nautical theme but not exactly a traditional design.
Would you care to add your own?

My late father had a rose and anchor tattoo on his left forearm he got during WW II after a visit to a Lisbon whorehouse on his 17th birthday.

Faced with such an overwhelmingly old-school tattoo acquisition circumstance, I am deferring my own first tattoo until I do a trans-Atlantic and/or cross the Equator on my own boat.

I was planning to wait and collect a few tattoos from around the world done in their traditional styles & methods. I'd be a floating atlas. For instance a Japanese koi in Japan or and arm band in Samoa. It happens that there is a new studio across the driveway from me and the owner is an artistic genius and couldn't afford to fix his car so we traded labor. I'm glad I got one.

Actually, the compass rose is a traditional nautical tattoo. Its supposed to help its owner navigate safely home again.

Many shipmates and friends have tried to get me into a Tattoo parlour...
luckily no ones managed to pour enough liquer down my throat... before they've passed out or been unable to walk... to drag me in
Matter of fact a good Portuguese friend here has a Tattoo parlour called the 'Dirty Pig' and he's offered me my first Tattoo and earring free just to drill my skin...

I managed to stay sober during both the decision part and the tattoo part. The aftermath was exactly the same as a bad sunburn. Not too bad. Everyone that I'm not related to who's seen it really likes it.

Mine marks crossing the Pacific and the equator... it's a modern form, composed with traditional iconography. Picture here:

Getting inked in the Marquesas was definitely a popular activity for cruisers... later this week, I'll post a few other pictures from friends on our blog, S/V Totem Family.

I knew a guy when I was in the US Navy Submarine service who had twin multi bladed screws tattooed on his butt.
Next, he had his entire butt tattooed green so it looked like it was underwater...

In a previous life I was a biker. That is actually a big lie, I am still a biker. A tattoo is one of the few things you can take with you. All that being said, I drug the half naked biker chicks on my left shoulder down the asphalt a few years ago. After repairing the nipple-ectomy I gave them, it may be time for a nautical cover up.

I like the tribal tats that they do with the stick and needles in the pacific islands but it looks like it hurts real bad..saw a 300lb man at the Pacific Islands Fair once cry like a baby while being beat with that stick..ouch..DVC
