The 59-year-old German aerospace
engineer Rüdiger [Rudy] Koch has been living in a submerged capsule [‘Deepwater SeaPod’], 11 meters deep, in Puerto Lindo, Columbus province, on the Panamanian coast, for two months. Its aim is to set a new world
record, and show that underwater life is viable.
Koch began his adventure on September 26, with the challenge of surpassing the
record of spending 100 days underwater, by Joseph Dituri, in a lake in
Florida.
Koch lives in a 30-square-metre space, equipped with a
bed, a portable
toilet, a static bike, a TV and a computer. It has access to
satellite internet,
solar power, and a small
electric generator. With all this he can
work and stay connected. The most noticeable thing is that he doesn't have a
shower.
Its capsule is connected to a floating house. The circular structure has 360-degree windows and is mounted on a cylinder. From this one, the German goes down through a snail staircase, to reach the underwater SeaPod.
