Just signed up as a member but what's the penny for?
All--
I keep using this site and meaning to sign up to be a supporting member... and finally just did. However, the cost took me by surprise... $15.01. Not $15. Not $16. Not $20... but $15.01.
Any thoughts on what the penny is penny if for? I'm now thinking of the Superman 3 Penny Scheme. ;^)
That said, it did make me smile... so maybe the penny is worth it.

Hey, you smiled so you got your monies worth for that penny!
Slightly My father-in-law would never stop on the even money when pumping gas at the self-serve. When reviewing his bank statement each month he was confident all gas purchases ending in $.05 were his. He felt if he saw one that was even money his card had been compromised.

lol. Your father-in-law is a suspicious sort. I'm in Oregon and can't pump our own gas but appreciate pay at the pump so I can get out and swipe my own credit card.
I'm pretty sure legal background of the 30-40+ year olds at gas station is questionable since once i started swiping myself, my credit card has only been jacked once... and that was due to the Home Depot hack.

I used to know a guy who traveled a lot for work. He did the same thing for all of his purchases. If he was buying gas, he made sure that the amount ended with a 3. If he was out to dinner, he would adjust the tip so the total ended with a 7. That way he could really quickly and easily spot any bogus charges -- which he did on a couple of occasions.

Idea! Maybe CR is using the $15.01 to track supporting members and renewals vs other revenue sources (adverts, etc).
There could be a method to their madness.

Interesting as my Father-in-Law was a traveling salesman. Must be an insider secret!

Gee and I thought I was the only one that did this except I end all gas charges in a double like $19.33 or $25.88. Not so much to detect fraud but so I can identify the charges. Frequently I charge gas at a station even locally but get a charge from some totally different company name in a different state. Guessing the station is owned by some larger company or they might contract credit card billing to an out of state company.

"I'm in Oregon and can't pump our own " And here I thought NJ was the last state that still required infantile supervision at the pump.
The extra penny is probably a rounding error while converting your dollars into dollars somewhere along the way.
Or, there could be hackers skimming an extra penny off each membership. As Clifford Stohl (sp?) found out years ago.

Just a WAG, but the owners run several similar sites. Possibly they use pennies to help identify transactions.
i.e. 15.01 for Cruisers Forum, 15.02 for Trawlers Forum etc.

Tracking pennies? You mean, the cookies and active scripting are not enough?

Ashley, I'm serious - and don't call me Shirley.
I'm not talking about tracking individual people, Just a quick way to identify subscription payments by forum on bank statements etc.

Presumably adopted from the English penny. Which has been the name for a basic unit of currency for many, many centuries.

Re: Just signed up as a member but what's the penny for?
Because it was worth 2 "hay-pennys".
A penny was 1/240th of a pound sterling
A cent is 1/100th of a dollar. "one percent"

What's the problem? I see people here giving twice that amount every day.
