I fully agree BUT the bastards are pretty clever when it comes to being elected, they lie through their teeth to us to get elected, then once in government, they behave just like their counterparts in other parts of the world! My dear old Mum would always say, “you can watch a thief and a rogue but you can never watch or trust a liar”!
No-one will ever convince me that ANYONE with 1 ounce of common sense would give a contractor a blank cheque for any project, unless there was a, once in a lifetime, great incentive for the politician to do so...Take what you like from that...It's just what I think.
I wonder, when the books are made public, just how much money will have been wasted by our federal government, on their harebrained, make us look good schemes, and, we Aussies must admit, there have been quite a few of those wasting money schemes.
I guess I should have titled this thread, I've Had Enough Of Our Politician Wasting Our Money, and business ripping us off...Instead of, I've Had Enough.

Nice one, I'm gonna use that. And good luck with the Cat and the plans - see you on the water mate!
Regarding Australia and taxes & corruption, i come down somewhere in the middle of the two extremes.
I'm a tax accountant and while i agree that our income tax and sales tax (GST) is low compared to Sweden, there are a stupefying number of insidious hidden taxes in this country. At least in Sweden they're up front about their taxes. Ours are largely disguised, there's even an earlier post where the poster says he doesn't pay property taxes, only "council rates" - like they're not taxes?! He drank the Cool-Aid I'm afraid.
We have lots of extra names for our secret taxes to disguise them: duties, rates, levies, surcharges, excises, registrations, etc...
The Henry Tax Report (which has conveniently been forgotten by the trade unionists, sorry, the guvmint) named 150 hidden taxes on our fair island continent, in addition to income tax and sales tax.
So while i agree that we need roads, police, schools, hospitals, etc... i believe that around 33% of the tax collected gets wasted. Too many snouts in the trough.
By my circulations (and i really have done them, spreadsheets and everything, for my own amusement) we Aussies are the fourth highest taxed OECD country, when calculated per-capita. It's around $350 billion dragged forcibly from the paypackets of a mere 14 million taxpayers.
And when the baby-boomers who have spent the kid's inheritance start needing their nappies changed in aged care facilities, taxes are gonna HAVE to go up, i guarantee it. There just aren't enough younger taxpayers coming through the ranks to cover that cost.
Hence the need for more immigration - you baby-boomers will NEED those tax payers.
And don't get me started on politicians' retirement incomes, which has not been saved up for...
And another thing...
Gawd, i'm starting to sound like an AM radio talk-back caller...

I almost made it to the end before commenting.
I feel the same way here in the US, but I have not done the spreadsheets. Just seen others.
I also thought lots of some of the posts at 156 to 160. R -
Mr. B +1 on not being able to collect if paid.
I see examples of those that are "taking advantage" of "the system" daily. Makes me sick but it is human to remain in comfort it is uncomfortable outside. But some one has to kick them outside. It does not mean they are bad. It is called TOUGH LOVE.
Can't even finish today. Time for BEER!
But I have to say this is the longest political thread I have ever seen on CF. Are the mods all on a cruise or at a retreat or what?

Re: I've Had Enough!
Seems a lot here see themselves as "victims" and not able to do anything about the situation other than leave or complain. Sad.
Get involved, it's your government! Only you can fix it.

Nope, that is the biggest lie of them all.
You will replace one politician with another. The only thing they have in common, you believed their lies.
If you want to do something, and you believe you can change it. Make some of the things Congress votes on, popular vote (electronic, and through a web based system....we have the technology). The wages of Congress would be a good issue for popular vote.
You know why it will never happen. The Congress would have to take away their own power to vote themselves a raise. How fast do you think that will happen?
Keep thinking that your vote will change something......it may change who the current politician is, but that is all.

They probably fell asleep from boredom. I do have to say, as i always do, that as an Englishman living in Australia i, and my fellow clansmen, are collectively called "whinging Poms" by the Aussies. Judging by this thread, we have absolutely nothing to teach them in the art of whinging.
Coops.

I'm not a victim, I'm a realist. Your the victim, and can't see it.
I don't believe, I know, which is what sets us apart.

My point was most people just whine and complain about our problems when in "reality" nothing changes until people decide to do something other than whine and complain. Complaining on an internet forum (especially a sailing one) never changed anything.
As a realist what do you see as a solution? And remember whatever your solution, you have to convince a majority of the people to support it otherwise its dead on arrival.
So far all you've said is the system is broke and rigged. That's not a solution, that's just whining and complaining.

Re: I've Had Enough!
After nearly 300 posts I assume we have solved the worlds political and economic problems.
As the thread was never about cruising and as we are starting to get bickering its now closed.
