How to Conjugate "Heave-To"
Not to be a Grammar Nazi, but I am constantly amazed at how few sailors actually know how to conjugate the word "heave", as in "heave-to".
One thread title recently has the ridiculous non-word "hoving".
This word is slightly confusing -- but only slightly! -- because the past participle of "heave" can be either "heaved" or "hove" according to your taste (in nautical usage mostly "hove").
So here it is:
present indicative
I heave-to
You heave-to
He, she, it heaves-to
etc.
present continuous
I am heaving-to
You are heaving-to
He, she, it is heaving-to
etc.
present perfect
I have heaved-to
or (more nautical): I have hove-to
He, she, it etc.
past
I hove-to
He, she, it etc.
Therefore: To be hove-to.

Re: How to Conjugate "Heave-To"
If heaving becomes hoving, then leaving becomes loving, which is always possible.

Then do so, but just don't say that you are hoving when doing it.

Re: How to Conjugate "Heave-To"
Ha ha ha...When we're on the subject...how about explaining to folks when to use the word lose vs. loose.
Or... you're vs. your.
Then again, if my young relations are any guide...the concept of English, is on the way out. lol

Actually, it's minefield, not mine field. No space.
