Re: Guitars and other stringed instruments while cruising

I will be leaving in about a year for extended cruising. I plan to sell my Martin and Guild as they will not last and are too valuable. The answer for me is going to be a Rain Song carbon fiber guitar. Done allot or research and there is allot of YouTube info as well. the guitar is not affected by any element and in sound playoffs online sounds wonderful. Good looking guitar and I suspect you could use it as an oar.....lol

Banjo. Scares the salt away. That's my solution.
Being able to make music aboard is such a treasure.
There are some great tough soft cases around. Not gig bags, but like the Reunion Blues cases. Won't bang up the interior when the banjo (guitar) takes a dive in a rough sea, but will protect the instrument well.
I have a nice (but not super de duper) instrument that's 100+ years old. It stays in tune (gasp! a banjo in tune!) and has likely already seen more abuse than I will ever give it.

Randy, Those Rainsong guitars are amazing! One of the guys in our band left one in the trunk of a car back in September for 3 days and the outside temps were in the mid 80's. No idea how hot it got in there, but it's not warped at all and sounds just great!

I haven't had much luck with those elixirs but I play professionally and because of the low action on most of my guitars I'm somewhat limited on what strings I can put on my acoustics unless I want to add some shims and redo a setup that plays like butter as it is. I'm a fan of the Martin SP light phosphor bronze, but they are not fans of high humidity either.

If you want to save a fortune buy strings in bulk and if you're worried about them aging before you use them you can vacuum seal them or put some desiccant in with them. Most people I see with their guitars have cheap pawn shop stuff they aren't worried about or ukuleles ( the cheap ones).

This seems to be a great choice for cruisers on a budget:

Watch the videos!

Anyway, I like it.

I would suggest a hard case. They will maintain more steady moisture levels than a gig bag. They'll also bang around a bit more. elixer strings are great. Both good humidification and a means to lower moisture, like a box of silica packets. A moisture meter is good.

Also consider a carbon fiber guitar.

The heat in the summer months here in the upper Sea of Cortez will kill your instruments.

Re: Guitars and other stringed instruments while cruising

I bought a used acoustic guitar in Hawaii, and played it all the way to Seattle. I still play it and it sounds and feels great. The salt air and dampness did it no harm at all.

[For those of us without the funds or experience for a carbon fiber guitar, I present the Waterman.

I wanted to link a video but only the YouTube app comes up, even after I cleared defaults.
