First timers resources

All,

Will be captaining a bunch of first time cruisers this summer and wonder if there is a website that outlines key issues and courtesies while living on a boat. E.g. Why navy showers are a must and conserving water, head usage etc.

Prob is that these are all friends, so I don't want to come off as a dick by telling them how to shower, use the head, open the fridge etc. I would much prefer to have someone else do that for me.

Thanks for any help/advice.

Yep. Here. We talk about it all and they can ask questions.

By the way, instead of 'Navy' showers maybe you can call the 'Dolphin Friendly' showers?

Gets a city slicker everytime

Re: First timers resources

Another way to handle it, is to have a pre-sail conference with the invited guests and explain to them the need for water conservation etc... and the living aboard courtesies. You are not being a bad person, just explaining the operational limitations of the vessel. Make a game of the water conservation, encourage everyone to see how little they can use. Help them get into the seafaring mode. Most people that come to sail on a vessel are excited to help out and do what they can, they just need the information. I wouldn't worry about offending anyone.

Re: First timers resources

I made up a sheet of rules and regs, what to bring, what to leave home, why we do things the way we do. I posted a link from my blog that everyone reads before they come visiting. You could do something similar and mailit out prior to their arrival, so they will know what to expect. If you will allow me to PM you, I will give you my link. Feel free to copy it, change it to meet your needs or whatever.

As host why not say it's your duty to ensure they have a great time and to also accomplish this there are some rules and guidlines that we follow to make it easy on everyone.
then tell them that the safety meeting is at 0600 and that it really means 0545.
PS: you don't point the flare gun sideways like it has homie sights.
