Ebola in the Canaries??

Just read that one person was taken to the hospital in Tenerife with suspected symptoms of Ebola and 2 more passengers are also here being monitored. One passenger was removed from Air France in Madrid feverish and shaking.
...who would have thought,eh!

Re: Ebola in the Canaries??

Yes of course..with 5 million visitors a year coming in its not a bad bet but if they look after it properly there is no reason they can't snuff it. Its sure going to be tough on the travel business, especially the airlines.

Robert,

Your thread and latest comments seem to be a big departure from the comments you made last week. Things change, but you couldn't be in a safer location, than on your boat.

When are you scheduled to head across to the Caribbean? How's everything? PM me if you prefer.

Ken

Re: Ebola in the Canaries??

Rather than worry ebola here start worrying about chikungunya in the Caribbean. This one will be a real threat to your health.

St. Lucia implements travel restriction for Ebola countries | St. Lucia News Online

St. Lucia implements travel restriction for Ebola countries
By Office of the Prime Minister - Wednesday, October 15th, 2014 at 5:43 PM Share:PrintRSSTwitterFacebookStumbleUpondel.icio.u s

PRESS RELEASE - Given the extent of the outbreak of Ebola affecting Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony has advised the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Vernon Francois, to implement with immediate effect, a prohibition on persons from these countries who wish to travel to Saint Lucia.

All visitors from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone will be denied entry into Saint Lucia until further notice.

Despite the fact that the President of Nigeria has declared that Nigeria is Ebola free, visitors from Nigeria will be required to present a recent medical certificate which clears him/her of the virus, in addition to a VISA to be allowed entry into Saint Lucia.

The Prime Minister says, the Government of Saint Lucia continues to monitor the outbreak and has allocated resources to prepare for any possible threat. Recent events in Dallas, Texas have prompted a heightened awareness and necessitate strong action to ensure that Saint Lucia is protected.

The Ministry of Health will continue to monitor developments in the United States and Europe, the three severely affected West African countries and will provide updates to the public.

Re: Ebola in the Canaries??

Hey you guys I haven't changed my mind, just thought it would interest those folks that follow this stuff.
Barnakiel, yes I am aware of this virus carried by some of the local mosquito's and its not a cool thing. When we spent a lot of time in the South Pacific we had dengue fever to worry about so we took all the precautions we could and never had a problem. Some cruising friends couldn't quite worrying about dengue fever but instead got ciguatera poisoning from fish we shot, go figure.
Hi Ken, Not much change in my feelings about this latest scare but Carla sure agrees with you. Carla's sister and babies arrive here tomorrow so we will tour around for a couple of weeks and then we will all sail to Gran Canarie and tour for a week, then boat jobs for the remainder and hope to push off for the Caribbean near the end of November direct no stops in CV.
Hi Atoll, yes you called it but got the wrong island, LOL.

Re: Ebola in the Canaries??

A US cruise ship has been denied entry to Belize due to a Dallas nurse on board.

Conflicting reports say variously
1. She has no symptoms
2. Is sick in quarantine
3. Tried to land in Belize from a ships tender and is now quarantined on the tender, not allowed to land or back on the ship.

Re: Ebola in the Canaries??

Yes wouldn't that be nice if it were a hoax but unfortunately it is for real. Lots of people will die of this disease before it runs its course. Really none of us know what the eventual end to this big public scare will look like but there is really bugger all you and I can do about it so just enjoy each day, stay out of hospitals and don't kiss people in the local mosque and there is a much better than even chance that we will run into each other somewhere in a beautiful anchorage.

Re: Ebola in the Canaries??

I think this effectively cancels this year's ARC?

ARC starts from Spain and Spain has ebola. Also, ARC starts from Las Palmas and now with suspected ebola on Tenerife ...

Or should we write an email to St Lucian Ministry of Health asking for their stand on ARC sailors?

Latest I have found (take it at face value only) is that she boarded the ship before her travel ban was put in place. It has been 19 days since contact and she has no symptoms. Once she heard what was happening with her co worker, she and her cabin mate quarantined themselves in their room as a precaution. Belize denied the ship entry. Most likely is nothing especially considering the duration since contact but I can't get over how Belize has more common sense to turn away a boat load of tourism cash and yet the wonderful U S of A is doing nothing short of importing the diesease.

probably make them sit in the quarantine anchorage for a month before being allowed ashore...........better take extra food and water for this years arc.......

though with direct flights to west Africa the cape verdes will possibly be the next scary place to visit
