I'm in process of buying my 1st sailboat in Ca. My broker referred a couple people for
CG documentation for ownership change, title etc.
My research has revealed the CG fees to be approximately $133. The title co. charges $375 which "includes all registration & documentationfees."
Are there other costs involved with my boat reg/docs & do I need help from a title co.? Are there complexities I'm over looking?
CG site seems like it's pretty straight forward.
Thamks!

I did Coast Guard docs last year. No title services needed. Just have bill of sail notarized and fill out old title with new owners and have old owner put in their info. Fill out paper work for new doc application with new home port if different.
If your in a rush pay extra fee to expedite. Takes a couple of weeks to get new docs.
Good luck.
It is quite easy to do yourself. However, if a new boatpurchase and you have any concerns at all about any old liens or whatever that might be against the boat then I might consider dealing with the company IF the service includes a guarantee of a free and clear title and title insurance to go with.
If all they do is fill in the forms and submit to the USCG then do it yourself.

This is what I was going to say. If there is a slightly dodgy past and the company guarantees a clear title then it may be worth doing, else do it yourself.
