Re: Celebrity Sailors--Who would you have liked to Sail with

In current times I would love to sail with Kevin Boothby (“how to sail oceans” on YT) on his engineless gaff rigger

We can even have a jamming session together

Re: Celebrity Sailors--Who would you have liked to Sail with

I was hanging out in George Town, Exuma's some time back in a secluded little anchorage away from the crowd, when this mega yacht pulled up. Shortly thereafter the crew sped off to the beach to arrange for an open fire meal of some sorts...then they went back to get the passengers.

Intrigued, I jumped into my dink, and zoomed over to where this beach party was being held. On the beach, was a couple I seemed to recognize, but I could not place the name. We chit-chatted for a few minutes and then his bodyguards made it clear it was time to move on. I did invite the guy over to my boat for a drink, but he declined....how rude

So I get back to my boat and ask my girlfriend of the time..." who is that guy in the topgun flick"...and she replied "Tom Cruise"....yep, I said, that is who is on the beach...without further ado, she jumps in the dink to see for herself, and sure it enough it was Tom Cruise, with then girlfriend. As my girlfriend was wearing a skimpy bikini the guards did not chase her away, so she got to chit-chat with Tom for a while, which made her day.

Re: Celebrity Sailors--Who would you have liked to Sail with

yep, not exactly my favorite guy, but my girlfriend thought otherwise....the only thing I really remember about him, was that he appeared to be quite short, he always comes across as this macho dude in the flicks, but he is quite a little guy in person, that, and he was wearing this wide brimmed straw hat with bottle corks hanging from 6" long strings around the perimeter...so I asked him about that, and he said it was to keep the flies away....

The next day he hit Georgetown to dine out....I was not there, but apparently it caused quite a stir.....he can't move unless he has his army of bodyguards with him...not exactly how I would chose to live...no thanks.....

Did anyone mention William F. Buckley, or did I miss it?

Several times, so you missed it. No surprising after 6 pages.

Tilman does not seem to get a mention.

Not a 'celebrity' .. what an awful concept...... but someone I may have enjoyed sailing with....

We cruised in company with, and sailed with willy Ker - a great gentleman in the 'book of real sailors'.

Some of these guys were . . . hmmm . . . odd, and not very socially adept . . .some others were perfectly comfortable in all social circles.
