Bizarre Sounds In the Night

I just had a strange experience and I'm hoping someone has some insight. I arrived at the boat shortly after 3am. (I work afternoon shift) My wife and I were about to watch a TV show and we heard what sounded like a person moaning in pain in the water. I scurried up to the cockpit, but forgot to bring a spotlight and by the time my wife passed it to me the sound had stopped. I called out thinking a drunk person had fallen overboard but didn't get a reply. searching the water with the spotlight I couldn't see a thing. I suppose it must have been a seal or an otter, but it sure sounded human and it was very close to us.

Could be marine. mammals, whales, dolphins, manatee's, etc

seals, sea lions, or dolphins are a possibility. We don't have manatee's here, but killer whales aren't uncommon.

Maybe it was an Arsenal supporter who'd just watched the game against Manchester United.
