Re: Are we alone?

Yeah, but even "off-topic" subjects are meant to relate to sailing or cruising - like Thomm225's thread last month about staying in shape while cruising - off-topic, but periperally related.

He's likely worried already busy anchorages will become even harder to find room in..

Re: Are we alone?

Oh common on, it's clearly relevant. Interactions with "aliens" is a key aspect of the cruising life .

Re: Are we alone?

Parsimony rules! It requires far fewer assumptions to hypothesize that they heard anthropogenic electromagnetic radiation than it does to hypothesize that the is alien culture out there that generates electromagnetic radiation at the precise moment needed for them to receive it. Therefore, their making a mistake is the working scientific hypothesis. We are still alone.

Re: Are we alone?

I think it is a relevant question. If there's no cruisable ocean on those other planets, it is not worth going.

Happy New Year to you all!

Statistically speaking, there's no way we're "alone". Let's hope that the distances keep us apart for as long as possible.

Look up some recent "first-contact" fiction like "The Three-Body Problem" by Cixin Liu. Such books make the point that any civilization advanced enough to contact or visit us would do so because of our real-estate or because we'd make amusing pets (or snacks). H G Wells and John Wyndham had it right: you do not want to be found and visited by aliens. (yeah - the Dark Forest idea. That was Cixin Liu's followup novel)

...and I expect we don't have a lot to offer aliens as a society, besides some interesting recipes and useless collectibles.

MEGA! (Make Earth Great Again)

Re: Are we alone?

Covid has made us all surreptitious practitioners, if not proponents of, dark forest theory.

I hope we are alone. New people showing from a far away land worked out so well for the Native Americans!
