Any printers or publishers out there? Question about Defender catalog

Do you have a 2015 Defender catalog?

The one I have is "perfect bound", I think I have that right.

The first and last six or so pages are thin, full color and glossy. What is the weight and type of the glossy paper? If I was going to order a book printed from that paper, what would I call it?

Also, the softcover... what is the weight and color of that.

Thanks

Re: Any printers or publishers out there? Question about Defender catalog

I haven't seen it but here are some generalizations...

Typical catalogue paper is 60 or 70lb gloss. Paper is generally:
uncoated: regular bond, newspaper etc.
matte: a dull finish that hold colour better but isn't shiny
gloss: a glossy stock that makes colour nice and sharp and is fairly reflective

Sheet fed paper weights are text or cover weight.
Text:
50lb: super thin
60lb: book weight
70lb: slightly thicker
80lb: heavy paper
100lb: thick

Cover weights are generally done either in weight or pts (points)
12pt: typical book cover; can be coated one side or coated (glossy) two sides
80-100lb cover: thick magazine cover to paperback book cover

Saddle stitch: folded and stapled; from 4 to around 64 pages
Perfect bound: pages gathered and glued with square back; from 48 pages and up

It's an arcane profession with language as bizarre as sailing, but printers and paper companies are really helpful.

Take it to a printer... he'll tell you exactly what it is and give you options.
