Alignment of Planets, Sunspots and Magnetic Effects

There is a theory (maybe quackery) that Sunspots causing magnetic field changes actually lead to volcanic eruptions on Earth.

The theory extrapolates that in about October 2024 we can expect a large increase in volcanic eruptions due to a particular alignment of our planets and the Sun... primarily the 4 gas giants Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune with Earth and the Sun.

I must admit that the lower right image does show a distinct magnetic field formation in the volcanic cloud immediately following the eruption in the nation of Tonga.

While I don't necessarily subscribe to this theory, I feel it is worthy of investigation and discussion.

Re: Alignment of Planets, Sunspots and Magnetic Effects

By Oct 2024 it seems that these planets are in an alignment that will cause eruptions to increase.

Re: Alignment of Planets, Sunspots and Magnetic Effects

According to the USGS "there are about 1,350 potentially active volcanoes worldwide. About 500 of those 1,350 volcanoes have erupted in historical time."

The theories as to what causes volcanic activity aside, what would be really useful is knowing which ones will erupt, the extent/seriousness of the event, and on what dates.

Tonga has certainly made the news with the eruption of Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai, but even Tonga has 10 other volcanoes that have erupted since 1900. Several of them several times since then. So is the recent eruption an indication of further eruptions, or has the risk diminished?

Pointing out October 2024 as the date for volcanic activity is no different than saying that there will be a period of other events like floods, droughts, earthquakes. Somewhere on earth there will be such events that the soothsayer can take the credit of. I can myself state that there will be at least 20 volanic eruptions next week (keep reading for justification).

In New Zealand. for example, we have a couple of volcanoes that have been erupting continuously for years; White Island and Ruapehu/Tongariro. And not a day (actually it's more like every hour they're so frequent) goes by when there isn't an earthquake recorded somewhere in the country.

So if this is a scientific theory (or quackery) that Sunspots cause magnetic field changes that actually lead to volcanic eruptions on Earth then great. But without any cited sources to peer reviewed papers it is somewhat dubious. But more importantly such a scientific theory would need to be far more predictive than when. Because there are actually always volcanoes erupting.

The Smithsonian put out a weekly newsletter of all volcanic eruptions worldwide. There are 21 erupting volcanoes in this weeks list:
Here's link to this weeks list.

... so, the same as saying that "Salt water is the cure for everything"?

Thanks for your learned input.

As I said, I do think it is worthy of investigation and discussion, scientific or otherwise.

Where is this theory hypothesized?

Solar flares come and go, with each solar cycle [±every 11 years], whereas earthquakes appear to occur continuously, with no obvious pattern. There are large [magnitude>7] earthquakes both at solar maximum, and solar minimum. This would seem to be evidence that flares and earthquakes are not related.
The Sun has entered into the modern Grand Solar Minimum [Cycle 25 ≈2020–2053], that will lead to a significant reduction of solar magnetic field, and activity. Solar Cycle 25 will play out in similar fashion to Cycle 24. Solar Cycle 24 was a feeble cycle, peaking at 114 sunspots [the average is 179]. Solar Cycle 25 is now underway, and expected to peak with 115 sunspots in July 2025.
Our own newhaul, actually predicts we are entering into a grand solar minimum.

You appear to be the greatest and best researcher on these forums, I was hoping you would possibly look into this theory, instead of dismissing it out of hand simply because you didn't post it first.

Come on man, you've got nothing else to do.

Re: Alignment of Planets, Sunspots and Magnetic Effects

I seem to remember that back in 1983(?) the world was going to end for exactly this reason as the palnets aligned and sunspots created earthquakes ... it was called "The Jupiter Effect" a book was written about it, scaremongers promoted it, TV shows desperate for ratings debated it ... then ... The planets aligned and separated again, and the world didn't end, and the scaremongers all looked for something else, such as the Mayan calendar.

Re: Alignment of Planets, Sunspots and Magnetic Effects

Like Kelkara, I vaguely remember some individual getting a lot of attention some time ago for his supposed ability to predict earthquakes or eruptions or whatever according to the Sun cycles. Then, he seemed to drop off the radar entirely.

But after checking out the video linked by the OP, I think the important question here is: how is your gold and silver portfolio looking?

Re: Alignment of Planets, Sunspots and Magnetic Effects

I can find no basis for the predicted “conjunction” of the gas giants, nor the theory that such [were it to occur] would have any significant terrestrial effects.

So, once again, I have to wonder where you came up with these ideas.

“The Jupiter Effect” ~ February 08, 1982 / Larry Gedney
“... John Gribbin closes the episode in the July 17, 1980 issue of New Scientist where he retracts his theory, claiming that he was "too clever by half." (By this he explains he means that if he had jiggled the figures a little differently, he could have predicted the Mt. St. Helens eruption.) It is as one of the book's chief critics astronomer Jean Meeus tersely commented in 1975, "The Jupiter Effect does not exist."

Around March 10, 1982, global tides may have been 40 micrometers (40 thousandths of a millimeter) higher than average.

Want to read an amazing article about earthquake eruptions? How 'bout this one. It won Best Essay of 2015 and appeared in The New Yorker magazine:

I'd like to thank Little Wing for posting the link to that article, too. Way scary. I had not read about that prediction before (it's what a sailing life can leave one out of touch with).

Extremely informative. And, the longer the slip waits to happen, the worse it all will be.

That is a very sobering essay... one would have to question the sanity of anyone living west of Interstate 5 that has read it and not moved further inland.
