Re: A call for mod action and user restraint

This thread has entertainment value, which some try to ruin by thinking it really matters.

I was referring to what you want to see... love horror, watch horror.. Hate it then don't..
Creating horror is something else and for the censors to rate accordingly..

That's probably the first "fact-based discussion" that should occur.

Well in all fairness, the climate has changed a lot in the past 6 months where most people live.

I don't know what you mean exactly. But from my point of view it really matters how you setup things.

With CF it's not easy because, I think, there are many different wishes:
- just some entertainment while sitting in the boat/at home
- need advice for tools/equipment
- need advice with sailing
- want to discuss politics and important matter like 'the environment'
- need urgently help (when e.g. someone is (temp., hopefully) missing at sea
- many other subjects, a certain knowledge/fun/wisdom/stupid mixture is nice.

So for some subjects it's wonderful when the discussion ebbs and flows. On other matters it really is disturbing, signal noise relation totally out of hand. But I want to say in general it seems quite ok for me.

An honest if not wise observation . . . about CF as with many things in life.

ive raced and crewed on hundreds of boats over the years. the happiest boats had a standing policy of "keep politics and religion on the dock". not a bad idea for these forums too...

Nah, can't do that.

We'd have to give up on "climate change" which is both a religion and very predominately political in nature.

Let's be clear - climate change is a widely-held scientific conclusion, which people like you have helped turn into a political tussle, for very unscientific personal and political reasons. Own it.

What fascinates, and dismays me, is the increasing number of anti-science, anti-expert, conspiracy-theorist on CF. A few have been around for a while, but there seems to be a real uptick in newer members of this ilk.

Seems like we are back to the middle ages where beliefs meant everything and science was something akin to heresy.

Sad times

If you want to discuss climate change and the beliefs of it is true or not, go start your own thread and do that. What is happening to this thread is about what happens to most threads of late. Descending into entrenched positions over topics that are not relevant to the discussion

The relevance is that it's the clearest possible indication that there are these perennial hot-button issues and people won't resist injecting their takes on these whenever possible.

So the mod question is: do you suppress the first such comment, or the first rebuttal? if it's the latter... there will be no change.

I see the same thing among even my FB friends. And just last week NPR put out an article indicating that US security experts are growing more concerned about radicalization, especially on the political right, and not just the extreme right or left. That was the most disturbing article I read last week. The firehose of information is knocking the sense out of some people.
