Zero Tax! Portugal Non Habitual Residence?
Has anyone claimed the benefits of Portugal's Non Habitual Residence tax regime?
Any comments or experiences would be most welcome.

No, but I am in Portugal now and loving it! Reads to me like the NHR program only potentially benefits pensioners and those employed in Portugal.

You're right. I think you can also make it work if you're self employed.

Makes that pension go a bit further eh? [emoji6]
Im gainfully unemployed (no job, no pension) so wont help me much. [emoji16]
Also, we are finding Portugal to be quite affordable, not as cheap as Panama, but very reasonable. Today we had a good tipico meal for 2 with beers for €18, not bad. The tourist places are at least double that of course, but they are not any better.

We're moving to Portugal in the near future, so I've been reading up on various aspects of Portuguese red-tape. One interesting point for boat owners is the watery equivalent of road tax for boats. The level of tax is based on size of boat and size of engine, and seems reasonable. HOWEVER, I also read that if your boat is out of Portuguese waters for two days within any 180 day period, then the tax is not levied.
I don't know how you would demonstrate that you had been out of Portuguese waters for a couple of days offshore cruise twice a year.

If you're on Fakepoo, there are several Expats in Portugal type of groups and in the files section you'll find lots and lots of info about tax, residency, importing a car and so on. I'd suggest a search for "Portugal" and then refine it to groups.

Crossing the 500m across the Guadiana is a long hazardous trip so wear all your safety gear and clip in..

I don't know if I'd dare such a long cruise, even with all the safety equipment and precautions. Maybe I could hire a professional pilot for the trip? LOL

As I said, the tax is very accommodating. I'm not planning to dodge it; I merely pointed out how friendly the system is. Some people seem to think I'm advocating tax evasion / avoidance.
