The only reason you will ever find me in a major metropolitan area is for the art museums. But 'David" isn't a real human, "The Water Lilies" aren't a real pond and The War of 1812 isn't really what war is about. And nothing I ever read or saw on Youtube ever prepared me for the fear/exhilaration of an over-powered boat beating into the wind.

Interesting comment about books introducing you to characters you've never met. For me it was almost the opposite. I took my English degree in my late 20s after working for a bunch of years and I would get into arguments with all the 'kids' because I had met those characters (usually worked for or with them) and could never see them the same way the others did

I think the “art” in paranthesis that he was referring to is something entirely different from the actual art that you reference that does all the wonderful things you mention. In other words, though many things are called art, so called art such as reality shows or even most sailing videos don’t have the emotional effect on us that great music or visual art does. So don’t be sad because he wasn’t even talking about the sort of thing that moves you emotionally.

Interesting comment about books introducing you to characters you've never met. For me it was almost the opposite. That is such a good point about the difference between what we experience first hand and the crafted reputation of famous personalities.

Working in the Superyacht industry, I was able to see all types as simply human.

I see Atticus did a YouTube livestream a couple days ago. Comments on YT video had quite a few negative comments about asking for money, with many observing there are many people who are in dire straights.

What I found disappointing is all negative comments were deleted. Only fawning adulation comments remain. I guess you don't have to take the bad with the good.

Oh well. Not surprised.

It is interesting why a small maker gets a big vlogger to have hull #1 (with more niggles than usual). It looks like The Wynns are getting a deal with St Francis for their new 45. I would be a bit nervous building hull #1 and a "make it or break it" new model and selling it to someone who, if they took a dislike to it, had the online presence to really affect sales like that.

Some of us that have been here for a while will remember horror stories from bad early builds.. if that was a big vlogger it could ruin the company... I'd probably just build a good boat and let the boat speak for itself.

They are not the only one who delete negative comments. It's one(one) of the reasons I'm not an Uma fan. He didn't like some comments I made, correcting him on some "knowledge" he shared on YT and deleted them, and when I called him on it in an email, his response was basically '**, Too bad'. And that was way in the beginning of their channel. Smug and arrogant... I know some people personally that have fairly successful YT channels, and they do the same thing, so it give the impression that everyone loves them and what they're doing. I don't watch them either for the same reason. Kind of a sad statement about the whole YT thing...

I didn't know you could edit comments. I thought they were either "on" or "off". For over 20 years, I have moderated an owners group of about 200 owners and 500 non-owners. While distasteful behavior is rare, it's not zero. I cannot imagine censoring feedback.

It appears to me, from the comments, and the kind of stuff that is said and asked, that the vast majority of the people who follow these Youtube sailing channels, aren't sailors, or even boaters.

It's escapist fare for them. Like a Jimmy Buffett concert for some guy from Ohio, who knows he's never going to the Caribbean on a sailboat, but loves to dream about what it would be like.

The ones I like to follow, are the ones that tell me less about their lives, and show more video and provide more information on anchorages and destinations, that I would like to take our boat to next time we go cruising in that direction.

Does anyone else find it ironic that the board that once hosted the legendary 'Hotties on Boats' thread is full of guys offended by seeing skin on videos highlighting the lifestyle?

I haven’t noticed anyone exactly saying they were offended by skin. But when you click on something that purports to be about sailing, it’s preferable that you at least get the feeling that sailing is the main subject. I think everybody likes to see attractive people in the videos they watch and nobody expects people in tropical climates to be wearing heavy clothing so bikinis are certainly among the appropriate attire, but when the focus of the video appears to be more about displaying the physical assets of the bikini babe onboard, than any useful information about sailing or the destination or maintaining the boat, then it seems like lots of people tune out. There’s an unlimited supply of “skin” utube channels you can click on if that’s what you’re in the mood for, but when you’re in the mood to watch a sailing video, wouldn’t you prefer it to primarily be about sailing rather than the sailboat just bring the backdrop for lots of near naked pictures of somebody else’s wife/girlfriend?

I watched for the cruising lifestyle with an austere flair. Which means mostly younger people. But also means Old Sea Dog which is as far away from a hottie imaginable, but I'd prefer him on the next bar stool anyway.

I don't understand the skin thing in these videos. Pornhub is free. If I were so inclined, wouldn't be searching for liveaboard sailing channels.
