How can that happen when anchors should always be secured by a secondary method, be that a pin or a lashing, etc...?

And the rode too? If this was the secondary anchor, maybe with rode only and therefore not chain that is locked on the windlass gypsy then again, how can this happen - surely the rode wasn't just coiled there somehow ready to spill out and overboard in a bit of rough weather... ?

I don't mind the Doodles channel, it's really just entertainment, but like many of these channels they are often better at making videos than they are at sailing and seamanship

How can it happen? Easy. Floating anchor and rode.

Re: Youtube liveaboard stars?

Yeah sailing doodles never did much for me. He always came off as a creep and if I wanted to see T&A I would go to pornhub where the bikinis actually come off. Sailing Miss lone star cough cough

Its not really up to me to say if asking your viewers to pay for your boat is wrong or not. To most of us that'll be a hard NO. Some of these channels have a lot of viewers so if the .02 percent want to chip in thats on them.

I saw project atticus video today asking to donate to their gofund me asking for 50k. When I first clicked on it today it was at 40k, checking again now its at 54k. Wouldn't be surprised if it went over 100k at the end of the 35 days. I then checked their patreon numbers. 880 subcribers with the lowest donation availabe being 3 bucks a video. Means at minimum theyre making 10k a month. Not sure if you could finance a boat with patreon income but I'm pretty sure they could swing it on their own. Seems like a dream job to me so would be hard going back to work instead of E begging on the internet. I'd like to think I would make do by myself but hard to say what I would do if I was in their position and I had that kind of a community willing to back me. At the end of the day its their life and their super fans money. People blow money on stupid crap everyday so who am I to say dont spend a few bucks on your favorite youtuber. I'm a fan of the O'kellys and Sailing Nahoa. If they ever got into a pickle I dont think I would have a problem throwing them 5 or 10 bucks.

Entertainment is changing and I think some of us might be still stuck in the past. We paid for cable for years and thought nothing of it. It does feel different when you see and sometimes interact with the people asking for money. Although somehow paying a huge corporation who then takes that money and invests it producing shows is any better. At least we know the money isn't going into the big production companys or producers pocket.

What does gross me out a little is Sailing la vagabonde repeatedly asking for patrons. I've seen their numbers. Theyre making 50k a month at minimum and it still isn't enough for them. I gave up watching after one of riley's rants on trying to convert youtuber viewers to a certain number of patrons. Like how much money do you need? I'm sure I've contradicted myself a few times in this post but just something to think about.

Re: Youtube liveaboard stars?

Paying for production of video content is not different from paying for Netflix, HBO or your cable in my opinion. If you enjoy the show and feel its worth a couple bucks for you, sure why not. I dont see the difference in that compared to paying a big production company for their content. Although I can't say showing girls in bikinis with big boobs is really quality content. It's just sad in my view.

But asking to finance your boat so you can go on with your vagabond lifestyle thats were I draw the line.

I guess I'm different, cause I've never paid for cable in my life-("57 channels and nothing on", The Boss). Then you end up wasting time watching something just because it's there. Just seemed like a total waste of money, like buying a new car instead of one a few years old. So when it comes to "donating" money so someone else can live the life I wanted, and then "brag" about it on YT- well good luck. That would make me feel like a sucker. Giving something to a guy standing in the rain on the side of an off ramp is far more rewarding to me.

I get it feels weird but the people willing to spend money to help you buy a boat are such a small minority. If you're a super fan and watch all the videos thats about 55 hours give or take of entertainment a year. Thats quite a bit over the years. I've seen channels that dont have patreon accounts and people in the comments are asking for them to start one. Doesnt make much sense to me but if people wanna spend money on their favorite channels it shouldn't bother us.

Re: Youtube liveaboard stars?

Atticus also threw in 'we are starting a family' on the kickstarter page, so please give us a bigger boat. Plenty of channels like RAN who manages to buy their own bigger boat to start a family. La vagabond at least got loan and sponsorship.

Next thing you know it's- "our kids need to go to private school..."

Nothing wrong with Patreon and making money off youtube videos. But gofund me just means bad planning and greed.

I totally agree with you, people are free to spent their cash as they see fit. No problem with that.

The thing I have difficult to understand is how you can ask people for money for a new boat to uphold your vagabond lifestyle. But thats just me, I would not be able to look at myself in the mirror.

Basically a lesson on how not to do a passage with some bad luck but the majority self inflicted- no emergency bilge pump..., was feeling sorry for the guy until the end when he spent ten minutes moaning about insurance not paying up (most damage was self inflicted and his policy was for the Caribbean not the east coast usa)
Also hes going to sell the boat as he cant be bothered dealing with the refit (which isn't that bad) and is thinking about getting a motor boat instead. But thanks for the donation.....
So did he say why he was motoring or motor sailing in 36 knot winds rounding Cape Hatteras?

Did he really not have a clue about the weather forecast?

And where are his bikini babes? Did they abandon ship back in New York?

Yeah its weird to me too. especially all the drama and crying on film to make people feel bad for them.

Couldn't imagine taking the risk to take off cruising with a less than stellar boat and not much of a cruising kitty. I think people watch these young couples and think Oh I can do that. They made it happen with what I could save in a year. A lot of these sailing channels are probably getting people in trouble or at least a lot of debt.

Yeah, I tried to comment towards the seamanship aspect but was drowned out by the money aspect which really seems to bother everyone.

I don't really get that, nobody is forcing anyone to pay anything. If you don't want to pay, regardless of the reason, then just don't.

If other people think they are somehow getting some value out of the videos that the feel they can put a monetary value on it then that should be fine too.

Highly recommend it. They too use Patreon.
Looks just like a bum and boobie channel. Beautiful 30 somethings exposing lots of flesh. Yeah, more flesh please!

It was his first 48 hour single hand sail in apparently easy conditions that turned a bit lumpy. After 24 hrs he was looking knackered and then has issues with the dink and looked exhausted and ready to throw in the towel. Then turned to go up wind to new Bedford? (Not from the east coast so could be making the name up) motor sailing with mizzen and heavily reefed jib (think he has a staysail?) Then the anchor came loose and he lost the engine. Not sure if he had a fire, but it looked like alot of smoke in the cockpit, tried carrying on tacking then threw in the towel and called up the coasties for a tow and de watering pump.

Thanks....makes some sense if he had turned around seeking shelter.

Re: Youtube liveaboard stars?

While I occasionally look at the informative and well done channels like RAN, SAILING NAHOA or UMA and really have not much interest in those sex sells channels (maybe a woman looks at this different than a man), I have two more underdog channel which I like:

The old Seadog
Sailing Melody (https://youtube.com/c/SailingMelody)

They make the best of limited resources and have a very down to earth approach which I really like.

Sailing Melody is nice because it's a little family of three slowly working on their dream becoming reality. They don't fit into the typical tanned super successful and somewhat artificial channels.
