I generally agree but have been surprised several times when non sailing friends who know I’m an avid sailor have asked me if I watch a few of the more popular sailing couples on utube. They seem a little surprised when I usually say something vague like “I think I’ve heard of them but never watched one of their videos.” So I think a big part of the audience and financial support comes not from sailors like you and I, but from non sailors. For me, the exception is when I have stumbled across a couple that makes videos when I’m trying to research something about my boat that I’m working on or am interested in learning more about. Then, if I like that video and learn something useful from them I might get sort of interested in them as people and be curious enough about them snd their travels to watch a few more of their videos and I’ve found several that were quite entertaining. But as far as just watching a sailing couple do yet another version of “our life in paradise” I have very little interest. It’s sort of similar to how I feel about watching porn or watching other people eat delicious food. Sailing, sex, great cuisine can all be great fun to participate in, but watching others do any of those just seems pretty boring to me and pales in comparison to the real things so I don’t get the attraction some people seem to have for it.

Wow — this is a whole other level. Delos and Isbjorn crews sailing to Svalbard (80 degrees North). Just finished watching; highly recommended.

Re: Youtube liveaboard stars?
Looks like Bobby of Sailing Doodles is now in a world of hurt with a $100,000 insurance claim....which he says has been denied.
Apparently, he ran into BAD trouble single handing near Cape Hatteras. The short of it......seas got bad...winds over 30knots....some kind of fire maybe in his transmission, water ingress and a call to the coast guard for rescue. The boat didn't sink but sits in a marina with "significant systems damages".
He's now seeking donations, (of course), and is hawking a 35 minute pay per view video he made during the ordeal.

Whatever will he do? (insert hand-wringing) All those years making money from his videos and he has the courage to ask for $100K in donations. What a fine example - I want to be like him when I grow up.

I hear ya. Yea...some of the comments I've read are not very complimentary. Mostly because he chose to go on a 48 hour single handed voyage around Cape Hatteras this time of year. However, it looks like the VAST majority of commenters are "We're so sorry, we wanna help"
I'm guessing with over 300K subscribers, he will get that 100 grand and more in short order. But here's the rub....
Supposedly, there is a chance he won't invest the money in repairs, but will buy a new boat instead. I'm not confirming this as fact, but I read this was a possibility after somebody mentioned it after watching his pay per view.
BTW, most people are advising him to get a lawyer to take on the insurance company....so he MAY make out on that too.

Re: Youtube liveaboard stars?
We don't know all of the circumstances yet so this is somewhat of a general comment, but always, and I repeat always have your sailing boat setup and ready to be able to SAIL in bad weather.
I've never understood the option of taking down the sails and motoring when the going gets tough.
Bobby has a big heavy boat and he should be able to set a heavy weather staysail or other combination and just hunker down.
As he said, disasters never have one sole cause and are normally a combination of snowballing factors, but what I normally see in these situations is that many of those factors end up being 90% self inflicted.
Let's see what comes out as the story becomes more common knowledge.

Just ONE of the reasons I stopped watching him and others (Uma come to mind) long ago. Something about their personalities that didn't sit well with me...

I understand that too. In this case I was turned off by the begging. First he said I'm not gonna beg for help...then later....he begs for help.
Now I feel for the guy.....he was dealt a bad hand with his career ending stroke. I gotta give Bobby credit for doing a great job making lemonade out of lemons. He's quite enterprising and appears to have done quite well for himself. Good for him.

Re: Youtube liveaboard stars?
Their thumbnail popped up once in my feed, never clicked into it. Looked like a typical clickbait Caribbean channel.
Very confusing channel. Only theme i can see is maximum clicks. Random megayacht reviews thrown in.
Production quality no better than old sea dog.

Sex sells and Bobby is no dummy. What's sad for him is except for Laura, it APPEARS that his bikini babes are just that...click bait ornaments. I could be wrong obviously and maybe every night is an orgy, but I doubt it. He ran off to Thailand at one point because he said he wasn't "dating" the 2 girls on board.
I gotta hand it to him though....I have NO idea how he gets these gals.....
WANTED.....Hot 20 something bikini babe with BIG hooters to sail with middle aged YouTube dude. Willingness to prance around topless a bonus.
It appeared that life definitely didn't suck for Bobby.

The hot 20 something bikini babes just want the channel to get them some more instagram followers so they can be 'influencers'. Notice how each girl is introduces with her Instagram account. Just saw my first video. someone is called '@hotharbourgirl...........Probably doesn't have a lot on her plate, may as well cruise for free around the Caribbean for a while, I doubt bobby is getting any.

Re: Youtube liveaboard stars?
All it takes nowadays is boobs, string bikinis and a patreon account. And you have yourself a YouTube channel with ever growing subscriber base that can keep you going. Doing nothing productive for the rest of your life.
