I add an ice maker to the list above. Can't get used to warm cocktails.

Windvane self-steering, though only applicable if you're going offshore for extended periods.
A comfortable matress in the main berth
A solar array that'll keep you topped-up without resorting to engine/generator starts.

Alternatively, just load up with three loads of beer and you'll probably cope without the three above.

Re: Your top 3 favorite items for living aboard

It would be easier to break this into sub categories:

1) Top 'n' for the boat

The boat doesn't care about reading, drinking or eating. Good electronics and being comfortable and safe are very important to us.

2) Top 'n' for the Galley

The galley doesn't care about the boat. Food is important to us and we enjoy cooking as a past time.

3) Top 'n' for the crew

A happy crew is a happy cruise. Not being able to read or have cold drinks would end a cruise pretty quickly. Ice is a never ending quest on my boat.

Re: Your top 3 favorite items for living aboard

1. Solar ( enough to get you thru the night )
2. Tablet computer ( does everything from provide books and movies to plot position )
3. Water proof binoculars. ( really helps see the naked people on the other boats, just kidding, actually you can't make good decisions without knowing what that thing on the horizon "Really" is. ( storm, super tanker, red buoy, breaking waves in the middle of nowhere "reef?", etc. )

Re: Your top 3 favorite items for living aboard

My partner is my favourite "item" on land or sea. As much as I love being on the water with every fibre of my being, it is who I am with, not what I am doing that is of primary importance to me. If he couldn't sail, neither would I.

Otherwise:
1. Kindle
2. Snorkel & mask
3. Dinghy small enough for me to deploy and drag ashore singlehanded

9 more days of work and then retirement, then moving onto the boat. Glad to see we have all the items listed above except for the watermaker.
  1. 104 ft2 hard bimini with water collection with netting all around
  2. 530 watts of solar (with six 6v deep cycle batts)
  3. refrigeration (with the ability to make ice cubes-limited)
already got the mate who likes to mate !
