Young cruisers
Hello everyone,
My girlfriend and I will start cruising from the Netherlands to the Med, Canaries, Cape Verdes.
We've met many lovely cruisers on our previous holidays, but rarely people of our age (28). Does anyone know if some forums/sites/apps are meant for younger cruisers to find each other?
Don't get me wrong, we still want to meet cruisers of every age

Re: Young cruisers
I am 40 years ahead of you so take my advice with a grain of salt.
Under 40: Snapchat, Instagram, X, Twitter, Tic-Tok. Reddit.
Over 40: Facebook, YouTube, the Post Office, Doctor's office.
Why not start one ?

Re: Young cruisers
There is a group called "Young Cruisers" on noforeignland. Seems to have 40 members scattered around the world.

Re: Young cruisers
How did you get here ?
I have always thought the age limit at CF was 65 !
Welcome. You will meet countless young adventurers like you - in any bar, launderette and dock of this sailing world.
Personally, I think the young meet mostly at TikTok and other such places. So if you are age driven then probably one of those media platforms will serve you very well.
You can always come back to CF for know-how and gossip !
Cheers,
barnakiel
age-less, weightless, and pointless ;-)

Re: Young cruisers
Thanks everyone,
I'm 28 without instagram, tiktok, snapchat or facebook, that might explain why I can't find my peers
Noforeignland and YCA are neat platforms but only one or two boats in de Med, I'll try to get everyone I meet to get on those platforms.
Hopefully CF doesn't find out I'm too young!
Cheers

Are you a member of the Dutch Vertrekkers WhatsApp community? It's a mix of ages but certainly some around your age. If not, send me a pm.

The Norforeignland group is a great way to find other young cruisers because you can filter the map to show only boats around you that are part of the group.

You are going to meet many more in the geriatric vintage. We are retired and every day is Saturday. More young folks are able to cruise now with Starlink and work remotely.
Join the Salty Dawgs and enjoy our company especially in the Caribbean. Be sure to keep tuned in on VHS in harbors. Many local radio nets are active in-season. Usually there is an AM daily broadcast. Find out when, what channel. Look for SSCA OCC and Salty Dawg burgees. They are great resources and pretty friendly.

Re: Young cruisers
Don't focus on age, but do focus on making friends. Some of my closest friends are 30+ yrs older than we are. It's not like you're looking for a dating pool.

Re: Young cruisers
There's plenty out there in the <40 age bracket.. I've run into them all round the world from Turkey and the Med across to Perth in Australia and points in between both solo sailors to late 20's/early 30's couple with toddlers.
Its just a case of right time, right place..

Re: Young cruisers
We cruised a lot in our late 20's early 30's and absolutely met folks our age. We still do not have social media besides a few forums. So your situation was similar to ours. For us the trick was mostly to be a bit aggressive about speaking to people when we saw them.
Strange to say it: but learn to profile! haha Sunglasses tan lines, cruising jewellery..
We notice young folks tend to need work, bartenders, waiters/waitresses, dive centers, etc..
Laundromats are always a great social experience if you are willing to walk over and say hello.
Cruising cookouts were good for us.
Small boats! (profiling..haha) we would cruise by small boats and try to say hello, we sailed a small 30' cutter ourselves.

Re: Young cruisers
If you are not accustomed to operating in the world of social media, your opportunity to meet folks in or around 30 years old will be more limited. It is relatively uncommon for many late 20 or 30 somethings to have break free and are able to afford the cruising lifestyle. Perhaps now that working from home is in vogue there are more than in the past. That said, there are still those personal assistant types that work as mates and cooks on the boat of cruisers those twice your age, but they tend to much less free time to play than true cruisers. By early January in FL Keys and a number of the Caribbean islands there are more that come down to help sell the time shares or work as bartenders or other hospitality work. Some are rock stars and some are the children of seasonal residents and few others serving the charter industry and transient yachts. The bar scene would be a good place to start, not so much church anymore.
