Winter live aboard in Germany?

Does anyone have any recommendations for living aboard over winter in Germany? Prefer somewhere with a town/shops nearby. (13m yacht with 2m draft).

Re: Winter live aboard in Germany?

Are you thinking of the coast or inland? The German canal system regularly freezes solid during the winter as the winter temperatures inland are quite a bit cooler than some other northern European countries like the UK.

At the Baltic end of the Kiel canal there is a large posh marina.

Try Bremen Vegesack community harbour just beside Lürssen shipyard.
A former collegue of mine lived there onboard in winter. Big shopping mall directly close by, a small trainstation as well.
There where a number of yachts in the water in winter. Big and small.

Good luck.

Re: Winter live aboard in Germany?

Thanks for the tips. Looking at northern coast, preferably Baltic side.

Baltic side, try Denholm Island in Stralsund if you are on a budget.

I once had a good deal there with some local fisherman (though draft was not a issue as Lady Rover is a catamaran).

Re: Winter live aboard in Germany?

Hi,

I would skip on Dänholm / Stralsund, far away from anything.

Baltic Side, Kieler Förde: http://www.sporthafen-schwentine.de/

Small yard, nice people. I guess the phone number might be out of date (Harbor Master changed like a year ago). But email should work. or just call the hotel, they will know how to reach the harbormaster. Hotel in Kiel am Hafen / Kiel Pension / Übernachtungen - Hotel Am Segelhafen | Kiel And it doesn't freeze over bc of the river outlet next by.

Or Hamburg (actually Harburg, but thats pretty close). Behind the locks, so no tides.

Yachthafen Harburg

Liveaboard is not that common in germany (but at least legal since two years or so), so you'll probably have to ask around a bit. If you end up in Kiel drop me a line, I've got some friends there you'll definitely want to meet...

In Hamburg you can find a number of pontoons in Travehafen (industrial port side) as well. I lived there onboard for some time. Prices are very modest. Official yacht harbours are hugely expensive (been there, done with that!).
