I think the poll has been up long enough to discuss the results, if indeed they are worthy of discussion.
Right now it is
19 - full time cruising
9 - 6 months or more
10 - 2 to 6 months
8 - under 2 months
46 total respondents
I’m not suprised by low reporting in the lower end, there are no bragging rights in saying I don’t
cruise much. There are only 28 folks who are reporting being out over 6 months a year. That I don’t find surprising.
But when compared to Mikes poll numbers about keeping or selling the house something is going on.
Land home, yes or no? - Page 8 - Cruisers & Sailing Forums
36 report selling their house to go sailing
43 report they did not
79 total respondents
The two polls have been up different amounts of time, but most response come in the first couple of days so I think something else accounts for the participation difference.
One would think the 79 respondents in Mike’s poll were all full time Cruisers or nearly so. It when asked directly on 19 say they are full time and 9 more over 6 months. Mikes participation was nearly double mine so if you double my reporting you would have 38 being out full time and 18 over 6 months. That is still half of Mikes participation.
I think that says that of Mikes group many went sailing for some period of time but have since stopped. They may still live aboard, or may have reverted to land. The number of folks actively cruising AND participating in this board is relatively low. No big wonder given the difficulties with cruising
internet.
Mikes question was also phrased to encourage comment, mine drew far less commentary. That may also account for some differences, people want a chance to tell their story.
Overall, if it points to anything, it shows that mostly we are dreamers, thinking of when we can get out and reminiscing about having been there.
Other thoughts? Am I full of it?
