Re: Who is cruising?

Maybe you should have titled it: How crazy are you? That would bring people in.

My land home poll/question has only generated 77 responses so far, but has 120 responses but 4,341 views. One interpretation of this is that most users of CF are not (have never been) cruisers. Not surprising really, but interesting.

This is why I expected your two last categories to score the highest. But this is not the case (so far).

Re: Who is cruising?

the views are always a LOT more than the posts or votes on the poll. Everytime you look at the thread that's another view. I've voted on this one but had probably checked the poll 10 times

I’m on an IPad, I believe people on a mobile device don’t see a poll

Yes, and I bet a lot of “views” are actually bots that are constantly hitting threads.

On a mobile device you tap the menu in the upper right and select web view to see the poll and there you can vote.

Participation in both polls is slowly increasing.

Maybe a self-selected crowd? If you’re not cruising then maybe you won’t even look at a poll titled Who is cruising?
The title may indeed encourage those cruising full time to view the thread more so than part-timers/non-cruisers.

Also, the proliferation of mobile devices using the app discourages participation as the app does not support polls. To vote you have to open in a browser.

Re: Who is cruising?

I think the poll has been up long enough to discuss the results, if indeed they are worthy of discussion.

Right now it is
19 - full time cruising
9 - 6 months or more
10 - 2 to 6 months
8 - under 2 months
46 total respondents

I’m not suprised by low reporting in the lower end, there are no bragging rights in saying I don’t cruise much. There are only 28 folks who are reporting being out over 6 months a year. That I don’t find surprising.

But when compared to Mikes poll numbers about keeping or selling the house something is going on.
Land home, yes or no? - Page 8 - Cruisers & Sailing Forums
36 report selling their house to go sailing
43 report they did not
79 total respondents

The two polls have been up different amounts of time, but most response come in the first couple of days so I think something else accounts for the participation difference.

One would think the 79 respondents in Mike’s poll were all full time Cruisers or nearly so. It when asked directly on 19 say they are full time and 9 more over 6 months. Mikes participation was nearly double mine so if you double my reporting you would have 38 being out full time and 18 over 6 months. That is still half of Mikes participation.

I think that says that of Mikes group many went sailing for some period of time but have since stopped. They may still live aboard, or may have reverted to land. The number of folks actively cruising AND participating in this board is relatively low. No big wonder given the difficulties with cruising internet.

Mikes question was also phrased to encourage comment, mine drew far less commentary. That may also account for some differences, people want a chance to tell their story.

Overall, if it points to anything, it shows that mostly we are dreamers, thinking of when we can get out and reminiscing about having been there.

Other thoughts? Am I full of it?

There's not really "bragging rights" in saying you cruise full time. Not like some big achievement.

I would say the the poll is pretty close in percentage terms of what I've seen.

I agree Howard. No surprise really. While this is the Cruisers Forum, our two polls indicate that most users of CF are not currently cruisers. Maybe we should run another poll asking what status each person puts themselves in. Something like:

Where are you on the “cruiser” spectrum?
  • Currently cruising
  • Former cruiser
  • Actively planning to cruise
  • Dreaming of cruising
  • Not a cruiser, just interested in learning

Good, except change the title to FREE BEER and raffle off a six pack to a random participant.
