Re: Where are All the Americans?

well, our flag was very old and faded until I replaced it last week but yes there are American boats in the WIndwards. We have been here since December - now in Martinique where it is true that the French know how to cook better than the Brits do. And as for making threads political, I always thought unplugging from the mindless 24 hour news cycle was one of the major benefits of cruising. I have met quite a few sailors here and would help out any of them - politics really don't matter to things like that

Even after being asked not too, some of you just can't resist the snide comments...pathetic.

It's tempting to take our flag down.

Re: Where are All the Americans?

I agree Red Sky but since this turned out political... let me just add that sometimes as a Captain of large crew, who were constantly broiled in petty differences and "recreational complaining", sometimes what I hoped for was an honest to goodness Storm to bring the Team together.

After many many years of political correctness... Trump's methods are like that Storm

I'm not American, but I wish their President the best and will judge him on the results, rather than the media stoked up fears of the 'Disappointed'

Plenty of Americans in windwards. No more or less than other years. This is a meaningless thread that should be closed.

Really? We just put ours back up.

(See how that works?)

Life shocker alert: When your candidate won, other people were as unhappy as you are now. Grow up and move on.

Re: Where are All the Americans?

Almost all US American cruisers we met had Cayman / Malta / British Virgins / Panama / etc. flags. The few with American flags were mostly Ruskis or Serbs registered in Deleware.

You wight be actually surrounded with US Americans without ever knowing it.

Or maybe this season they decided to stay on their side of the wall ??? ;-)))))

(Seriously though, I think you see mostly US boats once beyond and above Puerto Rico. - PR, Dominicana, Cuba, T&C, Bahamas, Central America, etc.)

Cheers,
b.

Re: Where are All the Americans?

More American flags in the Med now than we've seen in four years. American Cruisers, like most other cruisers go to places where the US dollar is strongest.

Europe is a bargain right now with the Euro at $1.04-$1.08. Why eat tacos and overpriced food when you can be having French cuisine? Great wine for $1-$5 per bottle. 2 liter (imported) beers for only $2.

A large amount of Turks, Greeks etc use this dodge in the Med to get out of the heavy taxes.

Don't think for a single minute this is what most Americans want.
Only the very rich or the very stupid, not your average sailor.
It's my belief that most people of the world want the exact same 3 things
1. The wherewithal to earn a decent living
2. To see their children grow up safe and healthy
3. To be left alone
Cheers

Aaaah... "He who must not be named" seems to be delivering on the promises that got him into the position where he was destined. I am encouraged beyond description.

Re: Where are All the Americans?

I've always been baffled by the American culture in this regard (I'm American). I've done both the SE Asia and European backpacking circuit thing, and you hardly ever see a fellow American out there roughing it in the shitty hostels. Literally every country can be represented in the group you go out to a bar with at night, but the Americans.

I once asked my good friend why he didn't take some time to travel. After all of the standard excuses(not enough time, money, etc) he admitted that he found it pointless to leave the US, because he believed that he could "meet all those cool types of people right here".

I received a 25% pay increase the week the US presidency changed hands along with all the overtime hours I'm willing to work. Life is good.
