Re: Where are All the Americans?

Carsten,

My guess is you are still to far south approaching St. Vincent from the south. Americans will probably be running over you in the Virgins, watch out it isn't literal.

American citizens cannot be denied entry into USA.

I know some Americans cruising the Carib now. However, by the time sailors decide to make it a lifestyle they've typically experienced the Carib islands and either head to Honduras or high-tail for the Pacific.

Perhaps all Americans were afraid of not being able to get back to the USA

How does a thread become political? Carsten and Vinni could probably give a ****. Leave the politics at home.

Ditto on leaving the political stuff out of this thread, or any thread.

Marinas down the east coast/ICW have been telling me that they see fewer boats in general since the US's recession. Our marina here in Annapolis is almost empty. I'm told that the boats are down in the Abaco marinas too.

Re: Where are All the Americans?

I agree we didn't see many of my fellow countrymen in the Windwards having just returned from 3 weeks down there. I believe prior posts are correct in that the BVI's USVI's and Bahamas are more in vogue at present.

On another point, this forum generally stays away from posting political views ....so respect such fellow sailors who do not share your views and finds your pundits distasteful.

Re: Where are All the Americans?

Guys

I started this thread because we literally don't see any US flagged boats (well almost none) and January/february should be enough time for them to get down here from the US.

Ok maybe we'll see them as we get further north - but if the canadians can get all the way down here - why not the americans?
And by the way - the Grenadines, for those that haven't been here while expensive are pretty darn close to paradise as far as we're concerned.

The ones you and I can't afford are flagged in the Bahamas. What was the one with the helicopter pad and something like the Capri on davits. I liked the Virgins tax free booze. Keep the updates and pics coming.

The 100 USD sounded cheap for the overheat problem.

Not that many going to the South Pacific from the Caribbean.

Certainly some are in Cuba, unfortunately not us yet. However, Grenada is a long haul to windward for US boats. Even leaving from Florida it's close to 2,000 nautical miles allowing for some zigs and zags. And we can never leave until January because of family holiday commitments. Also, there are some very nice spots to the north where it is easy to become waylaid. I could easily spend an entire winter season in the BVI, St Martins, St Barts, Antigua and Martinique.

Nowhere is far enough some would say!

PS: don't get mistaken for a boatload of refugees while in these waters - we have special hospitality for the uninvited - not nice

Re: Where are All the Americans?

I have to agree... all us US citizens are heading to the Bahamas. Lots and lots of part time cruisers these days and cruising the US east coast ICW is very popular. Very few cruisers that pass through the cruisers nets here are bound for places much further than the Exumas. Lots of folks have jobs in retirement or are exploring alternative retirement plans that don't include being on a boat more than 6 months a year.
