What is the best slip location in a Marina?
One of the first decisions we will have to make when we move aboard our boat in April is what slip we want to move it to. Currently the past owner is letting us use his slip but he will be wanting to move his new boat to that slip in April. There are a number of openings in the Marina. I am trying to figure out where the best place to move our boat to. Currently it is located on the first slip of the pier and it seems to me that there is a lot more foot traffic of people coming and going and so maybe a better location might be closer to the end of the pier. Any thoughts?

Our preference is always for a slip that's easy to get the boat in and out of, you know, to go sailing. Otherwise you're just a very small floating condo.

Consider how much you walk down the the marina finger. Moving supplies, going to the showers, the bar. Also further in usually offers a bit more protection from boat wakes (from those that go fast in a no wake zone), and wind. I'm a midway kind of person.

Upwind-pointing berth (ease of entrance and egress), at least one berth away from the main walkways (able to turn to starboard and to port, and more privacy); of lesser importance is close access to shore/facilities.

Ditto on choosing the slip that makes it easiest to get in/out to go sailing. One consideration is which way your boat backs and whether you dock bow-in or stern-in.

Upwind slip for sure. Close to the gate and bathrooms are good too as long as you're not directly downwind...
I always found a friendly neighbor was a big plus

Re: What is the best slip location in a Marina?
It really depends on the marina and you. For example, if you are going to live there long-term you probably want the safest and most protected slip for those winter storms when you are at work. If it is just for the summer, you might want to be near the outer edge so you can go sailing easily and watch the sunsets. Myself, I always prefer less foot traffic and quiet, which is usually the outer docks, away from the fuel dock. I don't mind walking to get ashore.

Under favorable conditions, I'd sail our 4-ton, 28.5-foot auxiliary sailboat into the upwind-pointed berth, bow-in of course.

In various boats over the years, we've often sailed into our slip. Rarely intentionally...

Every situation is different, you really have to cast a critical eye on your particular marina. For instance, one of the guys in my marina has a slip right on the end, plenty of roon to get in and out. Of course, it also exposes him to wakes from all the speedboats heading for our fuel dock.

Are you all of a sudden going to get honest with this guy? Well if you are, why don't you tell him what you really do when you wake up at 0430 with a screaming bladder and a wet dock??
For this reason and many others, I prefer the end of the dock- close to the entrance, and being able to sail in and out in my isolated little world.

Re: What is the best slip location in a Marina?
Depends on the marina and how protected it is. If open in some direction to waves, wakes, etc then get a slip as far from the exposed areas as possible.
If the marina is well protected with a seawall or something then my priorities are for a slip in an area with less tourist traffic and more quiet especially if there's a restaurant or bar at the marina.
Of course a nice neighbor is always good.

Re: What is the best slip location in a Marina?
The best slip is the one that is easiest to get in and out of in a variety of wind conditions. Assuming you actually plan on leaving the slip.
Otherwise, if you never plan on sailing, then the best slip is the one that is closest to the parking lot.
