This would make a good new thread!

Olny the brave would post though.

We named our Yacht Sephina as a combination of the star and also a combination of Jen and my middle names joSEPHsabrINA, so it works for us I actually tried a couple of other names first but they were rejected by AMSA or already registered (little wing, dreamtime) We are happy with Sephina, it suits her and us fine.
So you have to have an original name in Australia to register with a national registry? Bet there's a lot of ab-original names

I'd have called the boat Hamlet. He was a Great Dane.

Thinking about renaming newly our purchased 1998 40' Mainship Sedan Bridge "Can of Worms", do you think it's too cynical?

I saw this boat in the Johor anchorage, this year if memory doesn't fail. My thought was, 'they are taking the p1ss'. Now that I think of it, I was right!

Thought provoking - not rude - short - catchy - witty - got personality. All good criteria for an appropriate name. If it does not contradict anything you would like to stand for - go for it. The Pardeys introduced the notion that a neat ship is a good calling card for the skipper. Similarly with the boats name if you ask me.

No, I don't think there is any element of scorn in acknowledging that a boat has a big potential to put you in many unimaginable situations.

Not until you try to sell it.

A better name might be, "Don't buy this boat."

I'm glad I threw it out there, good thought. It will have to be our unofficial nickname for her from those of us that know and love her. We'll try to come up with a name that she can aspire to. Right now we are trying to recover her from years of neglect (prior owner is ill and didn't care for her). Our surveys only skimmed the surface of how bad off actually she was. Also thought of Pandora's Box. If nothing else, we are getting to know all of her operational systems well before we actually venture far from home.

My last name is "Word" and, as such, we named ours: Word Play as a bit of a pun on that and on the American proclivity towards witticism in boat names.
