Re: What Does the Name of Your Boat Say About You?
My first boat was a Pearson Triton named "Gracie". I liked the name and thought it fit well for a pretty little boat so I kept it. Last fall I bought a Catalina 34 that was named "Mondays Off". That name didn't do anything for me and it wasn't really appropriate since I unfortunately don't get Mondays off. I came up with a list of names:
Ocean Gypsy (a song by the British 70s band Renaissance)
Stella Blue (a song by the Grateful Dead)
Elbereth (from Tolkien)
Osprey (the bird)
In the end I went with Osprey, despite it being a common boat name I thought a coastal bird common in Maine was appropriate for a Maine based coastal cruiser.

You know I think it's the fact that this forum is heavily sail - and this is coming from a powerboat guy. There's just something inherently more classy and graceful about sailboats, and so the owners tend to name them something more graceful, rather than those crude adolescent double entendre names like Dixie -- ...well, you know. I can't tell you how many times I see boat names and think to myself, "Oh grow up."

Re: What Does the Name of Your Boat Say About You?
My current boat is called White Knuckles.
I don't really like it, but I generally don't change boat names.
Not because of superstition - but because keeping the original name all sorts of people will come up and start talking to you about the boat you own, which they knew under previous owner/s.
With this boat though I am seriously thinking of a name change.
Being a fast cruiser it is hard to find something - but I like Capricorn Gypsea.

I don't want to believe that sail owners are necessarily "classier" than power boat owners ... but on a sailboat, you can count on having to broadcast the name of your boat, over the air, to bridge tenders. That's what I think when I see names like "Dixie ..ick" -- who would want to have to spell that out for bridge tenders?

My s/v is named angel. She's a 35 foot alberg. It was the name she had when we got her. Doesn't fit at all.

My sister, who is a Tibetan Buddhist lama names my boats. It works for us. My sailboat is Auspicious, the dinghy is Merit, and my workboat is Integrity.

Those are all great names. Your sister has excellent taste.
I like the sort of names that the British would use on a warship, or that NASA would use on a spacecraft. Respectable, dignified names.

When we bought her she was Dreamweaver. Unfortunately common. After much soul searching MollyJo was our choice. Molly Jo was my wife's grandmother. She was a strong Irish woman who lived large, drank, smoked, danced and partied into her 90's, out living three husbands along the way. My wife is not a sailor and is terrified of deep water, so while boating is all new to her, we liked the idea of Molly Jo being close by to offer some comfort when things seem scary. Love You Gran.

- Happy Days (the guy who commissioned her was named Day)
- Cabin Fever I & II (from a Buffett song)
- Island Fever (from a Buffett song)
- Fever Blister (A 19' Nautica RIB)
- J.D. Mac (Tugboat named after my favorite author)
- Irish Lass (Old wood Mathews named by the PO)
- Panasea (Spelling intentional)
- Ol' Diehard (Old Trumpy named by PO)
And a bunch of un-named little boats and tenders
Methinks I've owned too many boats!

Re: What Does the Name of Your Boat Say About You?
I was once a student of marine biology, desiring a career where I could sail into the sunset. I also loved to wander in the High Sierras, climbing and dreaming. Then I started building stuff, eventually boats. An author of one of my textbooks described the ocean as the last remaining true wilderness. The boat's name was obvious, the place I wanted to be.

We've had our Catalina 27 for 2 years now. She came with the name Wind Quest. At first I hated it, but now it's really grown on me. But she's our first, so now I'm sentimental. Plus, it's not too stupid over the radio. Now I just need to replace the vinyl- I think it's from '72 and it's gawd-awful.
