Re: What Does the Name of Your Boat Say About You?

We just upgraded to a "new to us" boat late in summer. She came named as "Bearly A-Wake" with a cartoonish picture of a bear napping in a hammock. Guess it means we're a sleepy sailors who glide through the water without making a ripple. We'll likely change the name once we find one that suits us.

Skipper is Australian so we wanted a name that reflects that heritage. Aquatic critter with low-slung profile? With proper ritual, we changed her name to Platypuss. She's a cat so double s.

We do always chuckle when we see Always Something out on The Bay.

Wow, this thread has been going on since June. Anyway since I posted before I thought why not again about my previous boat. She was called Blue Blazes. Not because she was fast (she sailed and motored quite slow). My wife named the boat. Every time I came home, she would be standing at the end of the dock asking me " where in Blue Blazes you been?" Heck, I thought that was what she was calling the boat. Blue Blazes.

It wasn't me
I got the boat a few years after Shaggy's hit song of that name

I. P. Freely.....

No just a silly name I just tossed out there. This name is all pops idea. He mentioned this phrase and does describe times a lot of us have been in. It stuck pretty well after hearing the meaning behind it.

"Zero Float"

I learned this phrase this past summer. I bought my fishing boat to relax on the lake and well go bar hopping. Kill the weekends with some good company and some kick but live bands. Fall asleep on deck and awake with the warmth of the sun on me. Instead of being elbow to elbow on land. I'd dock hit the head grab a few shots and drift back away cast out a line and enjoy the tunes.

If it was not for that boat we would not be in the mindset we are in now to make this possible as tomorrow we will be making a list of what we want to do to fix up our first sailboat.

At times when you have drank to much you carry a zero float.

Re: What Does the Name of Your Boat Say About You?

I was buying 5200 at the local hardware store and the check-out girl noticed I was buying a marine product. She could not wait to tell me how she gained (through a domestic squabble) the right to name her husbands new (goddamn) fishing boat.

When I found the boat (or it found me), the name was nowhere to be found.anywhere even paperwork, although a year or so later a pro painter Albright rep sees the old name outline on the beam stern quarter and I put my hand over my ears whenever he would try to tell me! So I feel comfortable changing it. Well I am to grounded in reality so it does not make sense to name an inaminate object at all! An old timer said "why name it if it won't come to you when you call it? " Ever noticed folks name things for what they wish them to be? A bit of comptiplation.....but I digress. Being on a budget to the point of being a professional bum, (don't try this at home stuff even) I needed something really short to paint on the stern myself! After about 3 years of pondering three letter synonyms I realized the hull number was 42, only two characters! Then someone pointed out the the fact that according to The Hicthhikers Guide to the Galaxy theme "42" is the answer to the ultimate question: of life; the universe and everything! UMM.....I like it! So natually Murphy had his or her? say as I had registered the boat in the home port of the time...Green Cove Springs Florida....damn now I still need a pro painter !!!!!

Well, you could always move to Cox in Calhoun County.....though what "42 Cox" says about you or the boat I don't know....

My quick internet search of 'place names in Florida' also found "Cosmo" in Duval County, which kinda goes with the '42' a bit better........but I could only be bothered searching thru to 'C'...you might find a town even more appropriate if you search further....then you just have to find an 'accomodation' address there and change the boat's paperwork.

At least you don't live in 'Big Cypress Indian Reservation', or 'Pop Hammocks Seminole Village'....that might be a challenge for any signwriter....

And FTR, you can get any signwriter who specialises in vinyl-cut signs to do you an adhesive vinyl that is UV and waterproof, though I'd still put a coat or two of varnish over it, JIC.....

Re: What Does the Name of Your Boat Say About You?

When we bought our cruising boat with the intent of a 3 to 5 year circumnavigation (only made 1.5 yr and to Australia from US), we named her "samsara" which has various meanings, but basically "to perpetually wander" or "to pass through states of existence" (see Wiki for more), or more colloquially "the journey of life."

It also has a nice double entendre with our girl's names (who also came on the trip and we "got" long before the boat) of Samantha and Sarah.

(PS - she is currently for sale in Australia in case you are interested - that's the boat not either of the girls)

I don't have a boat yet. But when I do, I want my boat's name to show that I'm smart and a nice guy.
