What Do You Miss the Most?
I am not a full time live aboard, but hope to be some day. For those of you who do live aboard full time I'm curious:
What, if anything do you miss about land based life? Qualify if this is as a full-time cruiser or living at the dock.
Also, what has been the biggest surprise when moving aboard full time - either good or bad?
Thanks.

That's easy...
I lived on my folkboat for three years in Boot Key Harbor and without a doubt what I missed most was headroom! I hated having to lay down to put on my jeans.

I'm turning it around: What do I miss most about the Islands? Fresh fish, no set agenda, no worrying about the news being shoved down our throats, no medicine commercials on tv, the warm wind, little noise, the challenge of getting there, friends helping friends, new things.....

I've been living aboard at a marina since 1980 and there isn't much at all that I miss. If anything, a garage for projects. I built a custom motorcycle mostly in the parking lot and more recently a sailing dinghy on the empty portion of our dinghy dock. It would have been luxury to work at any time and in any weather and not have to put things up or cover up after each sesson. I often joke that my next boat will have a garage (but I'd settle for a permanent work bench :-).

Now 5 years on the boat. 6 months up North, 6 months in Caribbean every year. What do I miss? Nothing!

I'm only a 40-50% liveaboard does that count? Anyway, I don't miss the stupid TV commercials, the traffic, oh wait, you asked "What do I miss."... hmmm. Maybe the convience of jumping in my ride and going to town at the last minute for something. But, in all honesty, I can plan and I really don't miss much.
I do miss the wind, the windchime like sounds of rigging on various boats around me, and I really miss the rocking of the boat at night, it puts me right to sleep. LoL
I miss the friendly people and without any question I miss the ocean.

Yes - I may not be a full-time live aboard, but I've done enough cruising to know I miss those things greatly. Just wondering what the trade-offs if any are that people see. It's also why I asked about living aboard at the dock vs. cruising.

We have been living aboard full time for about 3 years now. Approx. 3/4 of the time we are on a mooring or anchor and 1/4 on guest docks.
What I personally miss the most is long showers and baths
The biggest surprise would have to be how easy it is for this lifestyle to grow on you and how much priorities have changed during our time aboard.

not much
I have been aboard since July occasional day sails. I miss a comfortable easy chair (hard to figure out on a 27 footer). But I am cogiating on the problem. Cogiating what a sailor is doing when you think he is asleep in the cockpit or staring at a part of his boat.
Surpise how much I like LA.

I miss having a place to spread out and do a project that you can leave and come back to tomorrow. But, I have found ways to deal with this, and I mostly am so glad I liveaboard and don't have all that extra STUFF! (I also note that when I travel or something and stay at a hotel or with a friend, I tend to take long soaking baths, which don't happen living aboard......but I only miss those when I see the tub at the hotel!

the list of what I missed is fairly short
* a fireplace (and the wood lot in the back yard that kept it supplied)
* the vice on my old workbench
* a hot tub (for that matter, a tub of any sort)
* a place to hang a dart board

A dart board only requires a space about 6'-5" high, x <8' long. Surely there must be a clear space that large (perhaps on deck).

I have been living aboard for about four years now and I have come to miss the workspace and ample power to plug anything and everything that i want in at the same time, not havine to plan for several weeks about where I am going to put something i want to buy, or how do I store all of those damned bottles. (bottles are going, just purchased kegs... Now where to put kegs? ) see my problem?
