Bought one of these.

And one of these.

Super easy to cut the mattress to fit. Just take the cover off, cut the foam, put the cover back on. Any excess cover easily tucks underneath. It's been an incredible difference, and for cheap.

Re: What do you guys use for mattress

I am a huge fan of both Foam and Memory Foam. I definitely sleep great on them at home where I can easily regulate the temp to be cooler. They very clearly sleep warmer than a regular mattress, as barnakiel has pointed out. I have absolutely no doubt I can easily modify a foam mattress to suit my vessel, but have concerns about the warmth in the tropical areas I plan to head into.

Has anyone found or used anything on TOP of these mattresses to make them cooler? This is a really big deal and especially for my wife who sleeps hot. I need to keep her cool and happy

That's what sailorboy does (plus motoring the ICW and calling it sailing/cruising) ...….just check some of his posts or watch future posts

And btw, the Alps Self Inflating Sleeping Pads work great on top of old cushions or no cushion.

Folks can adjust to anything after a couple weeks, so mattress selection really doesn't matter

Also, if you are overweight and stuck on a sailboat without a way to get proper exercise, it may be time for a change of lifestyle for better health

Yes, solid foam so pretty easy to cut with an electric carving knife. The covers unzip and can be sewn into the new shape easily enough too.

Oh, and the covers are machine washable which is a nice touch.

Spring $1000 for a Purple mattress and cut it apart. They're supposed to sleep much cooler than most. Then you can tell us how it all worked out.

Re: What do you guys use for mattress

I went from closed cell foam - extremely uncomfortable and very hot and bought a 6" latex mattress that was good, but eventually felt hard and hot as well. Tried a 2" memory foam topper...but that was also hot. Also the latex started to deteriorate after about 10 years.

At the Seattle boat show this year I evaluated various mattresses and finally decided on a spring mattress by Seattle Mattress company....most comfortable mattress I've slept on in 17 years on this boat. Also custom fitted sheets are nice.

I like firm mattresses, like rock, not pillowtop.
If you're on the west coast I would recommend Seattle Mattress Company. They are very customer satisfaction focused. They will even take the mattress back and replace / adjust springs until you are satisfied.

Was very happy with their service.

Re: What do you guys use for mattress

I have slept on the cockpit seat with my jacket for a blanket and a life preserver for a pillow. I have slept on a mattress down below. They are both great, as long as you're sailing!

Re: What do you guys use for mattress

I use a 3" egg crate foam topped with a cloth mattress pad. Works well for me, never hot. You can use spray adhesive to cut and paste the foam to fit a "v" berth or any other shape. I use elastic straps to secure the top pad and bottom sheet stuffing the excess material ath the foot and sides.

Re: What do you guys use for mattress

I turned the V-berth into the owner cabin during the re-fit. 1" of covered extra-extra firm closed cell foam on the bottom, next I bought 2 twin Ikea Slatted Bed bases, custom cut each to fit 1/2 of the V-berth (seam down the middle), next 3" of covered closed cell standard density foam, final layer is 2" of covered memory foam topper. OMG I sleep like a baby.

Re: What do you guys use for mattress

We just got new premium plus moisture/mould resistant foam mattress with memory foam overlay built in, can be cut to size as our bed bigger than queen and smaller than king with cut out at foot. Got from Clark rubber, very comfortable and I am not a small lady. We bought king size and they cut it down while we waited. $579

Re: What do you guys use for mattress

If the average night's sleep is eight hours (ie one third of a day), one sleeps for one third of one's life. If you live, say, 75 years, that's 25 years asleep, or 9,125 days.

That doesn't happen on a sailboat....except when at anchor, or in harbour. makes sense to get the best you can afford.

Me...well im awake and still looking !

I still use the mattress that Bayliner installed in 1987 with a 3” foam topper. And typically sleep great.
