Re: Wanderer or Adventurer .. Which are You?
I always considered myself a wandering adventurer most of my life but lately I'm feeling more like a derelict dockwalker!
It's been a long winter - I need the heat!

Re: Wanderer or Adventurer .. Which are You?
Good read, THX Doodles.
I think there are still adventurers around, probably many more than once. But they get zero exposure. Who gets exposure is the noisy, sponsored type: the first, the youngest, the only, type. The adventurer sneaks by unnoticed. The adventurer may not have an EPIRB.
Meanwhile my friend Martin is crossing to West Indies in his 25' of a boat that has many of the things some will despise off - wooden hull, fin keel, unsupported foil rudder and a less than reliable outboard. And when he gets there, he will try to cross the Panama Canal and then to sail solo rtw. I say an adventurer he is.
Me and my crew are adventurers (when things go astray) and wanderers (by accident) but first and foremost sailors (budget permitting), I think.

Everyone who has heard of our plans calls us adventurers -- we are really wanderers. Funny how differently people perceive things.

If it's your first time out on the lake, then you are an adventurer. If it's your 27th time offshore, then you are a wanderer.

Whenever asked about my apparently adventurous lifestyle I always tried to reply with my best hobbit accent
We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner! I can't think what anybody sees in them,' " (Bilbo)

Re: Wanderer or Adventurer .. Which are You?
Wanderers for sure... even our boat is Wind Wanderer.
Adventures are stressful, nasty things that make you cold or wet or itchy or sore, and make you spill your coffee.
They only seem like fun in hindsight.
They should never be sought out, but sometimes they seek you out... li'l bastards...
Funny thing is, landbased family and friends think we're adventurous, fellow cruisers know we're just wanderers

Re: Wanderer or Adventurer .. Which are You?
When younger, I was a pure adventurer, chasing girls and feeling invincible. Now that I am older, I am a wanderer, reminiscing about girls and trying to avoid accidental adventures. ;-).

Re: Wanderer or Adventurer .. Which are You?
Wanderer here. I get a huge charge out of those happy mornings where I can sit down with the crew over coffee and ask if they feel like doing anything today or just go fishing and read books. Came within a coin toss of naming PIRATEFISH "Watch Me" as an answer to my big sister's admonition to my 10yo self that I couldn't "just sit around and fish all day for the rest of your life".
Last winter it took me until Thanksgiving to sail from Annapolis to the Abacos, and I would have let it take even longer if it hadn't been for a certain cute little lady that had a huge desire to get to the Islands. I like to bebop my way to a neat place, drop anchor and explore it till I get bored. Then I bebop my way somewhere else. :-)
Now I'm bebopping my way around the gulf coast in search of a place where I can toss a casting net and come up with a meal of decent sized shrimp. If anyone can help me find one near Tampa, I'll be eternally indebted to ya. :-)
