Under $25 Boom Tent
Hey all, I was looking around at the prices of boom tents and (like everything else for boats) they looked kinda pricey, so I went to lowes and picked up a canvas drop cloth for $22, put a few grommets in it, and tied her on. Keeps the boat cool and dry - I don't even have to put my crib boards in unless it's really coming down.
I'm sure someone else has thought to do this and I have seen some poly tarps (I personally think they're hideous looking) but never something like this. Just figured I'd share the idea in case anyone else was looking for a cheap way to beat the heat.

Thanks! I thought it came out pretty good - even got the color matching the boat.

Re: Under $25 Boom Tent
I've been using the same canvas drop cloths for years. They seem to hold up fairly well and don't have that plastic flog sound of the plastic tarps. Last longer too.

Re: Under $25 Boom Tent
I can see an advantage as when the plastic start to deteriorate the shred strings of plastic and they are hot. Did you do anything to 'waterproof' them such as tent coatings?

Re: Under $25 Boom Tent
Bluestocking's 11 ft x 18 ft awning is made from 2 light weight canvas duck drop cloths. Wife hemmed the edges, sewed in re-inforcing doublers for the grommets, and the 3 athwartship poles. Sprayed with Thompson's WaterSeal. Only heavy showers get thru.

Yep. This is how you do it.
USD 25 here and sailing on the weekend, rather than USD 250k here and tied to the dock for a life!
Well done!
If it gets hot, two long slats placed at each end can convert your 'tent' into a fine 'bimini'.
Cheers,
b.

I thought about getting a can of the waterproofing spray (can't remember the name at the moment) but before I got the chance we got some rain and I realized that very little got through. I had my pop top up the entire time and the only water coming in was from the back when the wind shifted and picked up some energy. I'd imagine the company that makes them probably treats them with something due to the fact that they're designed to keep paint off of surfaces underneath the cloth but I'm not sure.

Re: Under $25 Boom Tent
I'm wondering how the canvas covers would hold up over a winter lay-up season???

Re: Under $25 Boom Tent
I have a canvas painters drop cloth, but it sure isn't water proof.... what are these made of?

Re: Under $25 Boom Tent
I did something similar last week. I keep the big A/C unit in the companionway when docked and on shore power. I haven't the best seal around the opening but a heavy insert of plexi keeps light coming in.
I used a tarp from Lowes that is waterproof AND silver reflective on the top side. The temperature difference is dramatic. I already have a foredeck shade cover that is fabric this is a very cost effective solution until my new hardtop and dodger get here.
The tarp had grommets and I had a nice bucket full of longish bungy cords to keep it fast.
Colin came and went while the cockpit stayed dry and cool once the sun returned.
